Geoffrey Gorer Foreword By J.H. Hutton
The Lepchas of Sikkim [Hardcover]
A complete anthropological profile of the famous Lepcha tribal community of Sikkim. Of the various tribes that inhabit the mystical heights and downs of the Himalayas. Lepchas stand apart as an interesting subject of study and are famous for traits like absence of aggressiveness, obsesion with sex and optimistic character. This book attempts to provide rich insight into the various aspects of Lepchas' life and culture, with special reference to Lingthem and Zongu villages of Sikkim. It tries to make a total picture by presenting three viewpoints—the framework of the Lepcha society, the impact of the culture on the people, and the individuals who were the product of that culture and society. It describes in detail their homes, food habits, rules of kinship, and marriage, sex life, socio-religious rituals, and their relations with environment, foreigners, other Lepchas and the supernatural. A discussion on social evolution and aggression also find place in the book. Various disciplines—anthropological, psychological, functional and Freudian—have been employed to meet this purpose. About The Author:- Geoffrey Gorer (1905–1985), was an English anthropologist and a noted author, for his application of psychoanalytic techniques to anthropology. He was educated at Charterhouse and at Jesus College, Cambridge. During the 1930s he wrote unpublished fictions and drama. His first book was The Revolutionary Ideas of the Marquis de Sade (1934). Africa Dances (1935) was an account of a journey to Africa, and another cultural study Bali and Angkor, or, Looking at Life and Death (1936). Hot Strip Tease appeared in 1937 and Himalayan Village in 1938.His admiration for George Orwell's novel Burmese Days led him to contact Orwell in 1935. They remained good friends until Orwell's death in 1950.From 1939 he lived and worked in the United States. He wrote The Americans (1948), The People of Great Russia: A Psychological Study (1949), and worked with various (semi) official organisations about studies in Soviet and other cultures. Modern types (1955) was his last book written in America. From 1957 he again worked in England. Exploring English Character, based on a large survey he designed, which appeared in 1955. Death, Grief, and Mourning in Contemporary Britain appeared in 1965. The Danger of Equality and other essays (1966) were collection of some recent papers. Sex and Marriage in England Today appeared in 1971.The Lepchas are one of the Mongoloid tribes inhabiting the southern slopes of the Himalayas. Since most of the area in which they live was partially or completely closed to outside world, there is very little information available about their life and culture. The Title 'The Lepchas of Sikkim written/authored/edited by Geoffrey Gorer Foreword By J.H. Hutton', published in the year 2014. The ISBN 9788121201254 is assigned to the Hardcover version of this title. This book has total of pp. 510 (Pages). The publisher of this title is Gyan Publishing House. This Book is in English. GEOFFREY STEPHEN KIRK
» N. J. RICHARDSON, in Oxford Magazine «I risultati raggiunti senza pretesa contrastano fortemente con alcune troppo sicure teorie critiche esaminate dall'autore. H. BRUNNER, in Revue de Théologie et de Philosophie Soggetti: Dodds, Frazer, Frankfort, Eliade, Grecia Antica, Medioevo, Jack Goody, Brunner, Levi-Strauss, Antropologia Culturale, Centauri, Ciclopi, Folklore, Ittiti, Mitologia Asiatica, Egitto, India.

Almost none of these problems has been convincingly handled, even in a provisional way, up to the present, and this failure has vitiated not only such few general discussions as exist of the nature, meanings and functions of myths but also, in many cases, the detailed assessment of individual myths of different cultures. The need for a coherent treatment of these and related problems, and one that is not concerned simply to propagate a particular universalistic theory, seems undeniable. How far the present book will satisfactorily fill such a need remains to be seen. At least it makes a beginning, even if in doing so it risks the criticism of being neither fish nor fowl. Sociologists and folklorists may find it, from their specialized viewpoints, a little simplistic in places; and a few classical colleagues will not forgive me for straying far beyond Greek myths, even though these can hardly be understood in isolation or solely in the light of studies in cult and ritual. Others may find it less easy than anthropologists, sociologists, historians of thought or students of French and English literature to accept the relevance of Levi-Strauss to some of these matters; but his theory contains the one important new idea in this field since Freud, it is complicated and largely untested, and it demands careful attention from anyone attempting a broad understanding of the subject. The beliefs of Freud and Jung, on the other hand, are a more familiar element in the situation and have given rise to an enormous secondary literature, much of it arbitrary and some of it absurd. The author has tried to isolate the crucial ideas and subject them to a pointed, if too brief, critique; so too with those of Ernst Cassirer.

Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/8" bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Unabridged republication of the fourth 1844 edition. George Catilin's work is still one of the most readable books about the Indians of the Plains capturing the tribes when they were still in touch with their most important traditions. It has also become an invaluable historic and ethnographic document for study of the American West. The Mandan tribe which Catlin so carefully set down disappeared in a small-pox epidemic only five years after his visit. Other tribes changed radically their traditional mode of life seen only in Catlin's notes and illustrations. Georges Balandier 1920 2016
Political Anthropology
viii214 pages with tables charts bibliography and indexes. Octavo 8 3/4" x 6" bound in original publisher's brown cloth with brown lettering to spine and bind stamped pictorial to cover. in original jacket. Translated by A M Sheridan Smith. Previous owner's name on front end paper. First edition. As a scientific discipline political anthropology is a relatively recent offshoot of social anthropology though a concern wit its problems can be traced at least as far back as Aristotle. This book fulfills a dual function: it is a remarkable concise and comprehensive statement of the scope and methods of the discipline and at the same time a highly critical individual contribution to theoretical discussion. It examines the relation of power to the elementary structures that form its primary base to the types of social stratification that necessitate it and to its ritual links with the sacred. Condition: Previous owner's name on front end paper else a near fine copy in a fine jacket. Pantheon Books hardcover
