‎"C’est à un sujet fort délicat, ainsi qu’il est d’ailleurs précisé dès les premières pages, auquel s’attaquent l’anthropologue Robert Hazel et le spécialiste de la culture somalie, Mohamed Mohamed-Abdi. L’objectif de cet ouvrage volumineux est à la fois de rendre compte du sens de la coutume de l’infibulation et de réaliser un travail de démystification à son encontre. L’infibulation est « une obstruction vulvaire chirurgicale avec clitoridectomie nécessitant une intervention libératrice ultérieure réalisée au moment du mariage », indique le médecin et ethnopsychiatre Erlich (p. 43), soit « la quasi-obturation des organes génitaux externes de la femme » précisent les auteurs (p. 1). Ces derniers, qui ont débuté cette recherche (d’abord documentaire) en 1997, décryptent le discours social, en particulier somali, sur l’infibulation, et passent en revue les diverses explications qui ont été proposées par des chercheurs et des observateurs à la fois africains et occidentaux. (Cécile Campergue, Anthropologie et Sociétés, 2009) — Ce livre aborde sans a priori un sujet controversé : les « mutilations génitales féminines » en Afrique. Conjuguant l’ethnographie, l’analyse culturelle, l’anthropologie comparative et intégrant des données linguistiques et historiques, il porte avant tout sur l’infibulation, la forme la plus « cruelle » de mutilation génitale féminine. Aucun des aspects de la question : effets sur la vie reproductive et le bien-être psychologique, assises culturelles, etc., n’est négligé. En Occident, l'infibulation passe pour un « crime contre la femme ». Ce jugement expéditif va à l’encontre de l’expérience des femmes somali et autres, celles-là même qui sont porteuses du mystère de cette pratique. Cette pratique faisait partie des choses auxquelles on croyait, qu’on faisait et dont on parlait peu. Les représentations masculines s’écartaient d’ailleurs assez de ce qu’en disaient les femmes. Comme cette pratique ancienne relève de l’univers séparé des femmes, il vaut mieux se fier à leurs intuitions. On constate ainsi qu’infibulation rime avec fécondité. Sans la conviction d’un gain de fertilité, jamais des générations de femmes ne se seraient infligé de tels tourments. La mise en évidence et l’élucidation des liens culturellement établis dans la Corne de l’Afrique entre infibulation et fécondité constituent le coeur de cet ouvrage. Cet effort d’explication scientifique devrait faciliter le travail social de démystification dans les communautés concernées.‎

Third edition.In the autumn of 1771 John Heckewelder entered upon his career as an evangelist to the Indians sharing the various fortunes of the Moravian mission among that people for fifteen years. The well-known missionary David Zeisberger having in 1768 established a mission among a clan of Monseys on the Allegheny within the limits of what is now Venango county was induced in the spring of 1770 to migrate with his charge to the Big Beaver and to settle at a point within the jurisdiction of the Delawares of Kaskaskunk. Heckewelder was appointed Zeisberger's assistant. In the spring of 1773 the mission was transferred to the valley of the Muskingum and Heckewelder became a resident of the Ohio country. Here several towns were build harboring the Moravian Indians and the missionaries. On the opening of the western border-war of the Revolution in the spring of 1777 the Moravian missionaries on the Muskingum realized the danger of their position. As neutrals both sides suspected them. As a result the moved their operations to a point on the Huron forty miles by water northwest of Detroit and built New Gnadenhutten in 1782. Four years later it was abandoned and resettled at Cuyahoga in present day norther Ohio. He severed his connections with the mission in 1786 and settled with his wife and family at Bethlehem. During this period of fifteen years he devoted his interest to work among the Indians. In 1792 Heckewelder with General Rufus Putnam went to me with the chiefs of the Seven Nations to treat for peace. Thirty-one of the chiefs signed a treaty of peace. In the spring of the following year once again he was commissioned to assist at a treaty with the United States for the purpose to ratify an agreement with the Miami of the Lake. Between 1797 and 1800 the subject of this work visited the Ohio country four times and in 1801 moved back to Gnadenhutten. Here he remained for nine years and preached the Gospel among the natives. In a time when there was a growing interest among people of science in this country Heckewelder was sought out in his retirement and called upon to contribute from his experience. In this way originated his association with Du Ponceau and Wistar of the American Philosophical Society and that of a career literary labor. In addition to occasional essays which are incorporated in the Transactions of the Historical and Literary Committee of that society Heckewelder in 1818 published this work. His Narritive of the Mission of the United Brethren among the Delaware and Mohican Indians appeared in 1820 and in 1822 he prepared his well-known collection of Names which the Lenni Lenape or Delaware Indians gave to the Rivers Streams and Localities within the States of Pennsylvania New Yersey Maryland and Virgina with their Significations.
