Das Frontispiz mit der Abbildung des "Village built on Piles in a Swiss Lake" nach Ferdinand Keller. - Lyells Darstellung machte die Schweizer Pfahlbauer innert weniger Monate im ganzen englischsprachigen Raum berühmt. Allein 1863 erschienen 2 weitere Auflagen sowohl in England als auch in Amerika. Im Nachgang zu Darwins 1859 erstmals gedruckten "On the Origin of Species" öffneten sich eine Vielzahl von wissenschaftlichen Interpretationen über die Herkunft des Menschen. - Charles Lyell (1797-1875) war einer der einflussreichsten Geologen Englands und seit den 1840er Jahren ein Freund von Darwin. - Rückenkanten des empfindlichen Leinenbezugs an 3 Stellen aufgeplatzt.
