Now decades later realizing that here are few left who know the culture and legends of the Paiute people he takes this opportunity to se it preserved. His sources of information are individuals who still believe in and cling to as many of the old ways as they can while their culture slowly erodes from beneath their feet. These older Paiutes who still live and retain their culture are referred to in Paiute as Wee Noonts Old People. this term referes not to age but to people who live the old ways. It is a name of distinction and honor that very few of the younger generation can fully qualify for. These elders willingly divulge their storeis to Martineau - they appreicate the fact he cares enough to perpetuate thier customs and traditions. In his first work The Rocks Begin to Speak Martineau brough an understanding of early man's method of leaving a written recored of his civilization. In this his second work the "Old People" are able to leave a record of their culture through his writing. After the death of his parents Martineau was taken in by a Paiute name Edrick Bushhead and raised as his son. He learned the language songs religion and customs of his adopted family. Always eager for knowledge as a young man he began to take hand-written notes of the stories he heard from the elders. As the years passed he sensed that one day some of these teachings would be abandoned by the younger generation as they adopted more of the ways of the white man. Mexican professor and botanist Maximino Martínez taught in many Mexican educational institutions and created numerous botanical works. From 1914 Martínez worked for the National Museum of Natural History in their botany section and was later amongst the founders of their Biological Studies Directorate. In this institution he developed his interest in botany the basis for which he had built up over the years though personal study and began to research and publish works on the local flora. During this period he created a catalogue of Mexican common and scientific plant names 1923 and a book on the beneficial plants of Mexico 1928. George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976.
