La scommessa e la sfida contenuta nel libro di Amalia Mele è come riuscire a dare, «in un momento storico che torna a riproporre l’amorfo e il compatto», dignità di forma alla sofferenza psichica. Al pari dell’esperienza clinica di cui si fa medio vitale, l’Autrice prova, da un’altra vita, a gettare lo sguardo e a tendere l’orecchio verso il territorio della singolarità sofferente, per articolare «il mormorio di fondo, il rumore sordo dell’’’assenza’’ di storia della condizione comunemente detta di malattia mentale». Ma la voce che narra, proprio perché racconta da un’altra vita, potrà essere solo straniera. E solo questa voce di confine avrà la possibilità di dire il fallimento, l’esito ineluttabile del ’’modello di cura occidentale’’: un «grande sedatorio generalizzato» e insieme l’urgenza di un risveglio, per ripensare, fuori del ’canone occidentale’, la questione della cura delle forme di vita sofferenti. Solo chi decide di prendere congedo definitivo dalla ’’maschera professionale’’ con la quale fino a oggi ha attraversato i ’’deserti luoghi’’ della cura della malattia mentale può incontrare e sentire, come inaudita e non ancora vista, la dimensione della singolarità e può, facendosi straniero a se stesso, ospitare la ’nuda verità’ nella forma del possibile, restituendole così la ’sua’ storia. Amalia Mele, psichiatra, lavora presso il Dipartimento di salute mentale di Napoli. A partire dal 1986 ha contribuito alla fondazione della Scuola sperimentale antropologico-trasformazionale di Napoli. È autrice dei volumi ‘I mille talenti.
