The evolution of the lexicon of ancient optics is described through the 'lens' of the Codices of France. The approximately 220 entries of the glossary are examined in their various meanings and usage, compared with their Vernacular and Latin antecedents, and with the treatises of the XVIth century. It is a catalogue where different disciplines converge, with impressive original content and groundbreaking language, to show and describe Leonardo's experience as a scientist and a writer. ‎Edition originale. - Vulgarisation de ses recherches scientifiques faites sur les invertébrés marins. En 1853, il détaille ses explorations des côtes normandes, la Sicile et bretonnes dans les Souvenirs d'un naturaliste. Des les année 1870 il devient un lecteur critique de l'oeuvre de Charles Darwin avec qu'il reste en contacte amical. C'est Quatrefages qui a défini la « race de Cro-Magnon ». - Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages de Bréau (1810-1892) war ein französischer Zoologe und Anthropologe. 1842 bereiste Quatrefages de Bréau die Küsten des Atlantischen Ozeans und des Mittelmeeres. 1850 erhielt er die Professur für Naturgeschichte am Lycée Napoléon. Fünf Jahre später wurde er Professor für Anthropologie und Ethnographie am Muséum national d'histoire naturelle.‎

(sie) begannen auch selbst den Boden urbar zu machen und zu besäen; doch bald verzichteten sie darauf, widmeten sich dagegen der Viehzucht und wurden Nomaden, aber an den dazu geeignetsten Orten trieben sie weiter einen primitiven Ackerbau. Vom Instinkt getrieben wählten sie den Weg nach dem Süden. Einige Gruppen zogen in die Gegend, die wir heute Äthiopien nennen; andere dagegen in die Gegend, die dem heutigen Uganda entspricht, indem sie den Nil entlang wanderten. Die Erstgenannten stiessen auf die Cusciti, die andern auf die Bantu, die ihrerseits ebenfalls von Süden nach Norden vorgedrungen waren. Von einem Ort zum andern mit ihren Herden ziehend, südwärts gerichtet, trafen sich die verschiedenen Gruppen und vereinten sich schliesslich in einer ihrem Leben besser entsprechenden Gegend, wo sie Zelte anlegten und Wurzel fassten, sodass sie endgültig blieben: in dem Rift Valley. Wollen wir aber die heutigen Maasai in der Vergangenheit auffinden, so müssen wir viele Jahrhunderte zurückgehen. Und es handelt sich-um Jahrhunderte vollständiger Dunkelheit. Um Helligkeit in dieses Dunkel zu bringen, können uns nur einige maasaische Legenden dienen, die die Väter den Söhnen überliefert haben. Diese Legenden erzählen von einer Migration, von den Tälern von Kerio zum Rift Valley, zu"den Weiden und Bergen, die dem Himmel nahe sind": d.h. den Gegenden im Bereich des Gebirges Kenya (5199m), und dann weiter abwärts, absteigend in die Ebenen, auf den Kilimanjaro zu (5963m). Hier geschah das erste Zusammentreffen der Maasai, heute Niloto-Hamiten mit den "weissen" Forschern. ... (S. 14)‎
