‎Nachdem in der Nacht auf den 3. April 1968 in zwei Frankfurter Kaufhäusern mehrere Brandsätze zündeten, fanden die Ermittler bei den Tatverdächtigen einen Zettel: »Der Konsumzwang terrorisiert euch. Wir terrorisieren die Ware.« Die Anschläge, an denen unter anderem die späteren Mitbegründer der RAF Andreas Baader und Gudrun Ensslin beteiligt waren, griffen eine im Kontext des Kalten Kriegs erstarkende Dimension der Gesellschaftskritik auf. Verstand die klassische marxistische Analyse die Produktion als die eigentliche Sphäre der Unterdrückung, so erschien nun zunehmend der Konsum als Reich der Unfreiheit.
