‎br. Ogni corpo ha un peso fisico, ma il suo corrispondente peso sociale cambia a seconda del contesto. In Polinesia, e in particolare nel regno di Tonga, un corpo grosso è rappresentativo di alto status sociale, forza, potere e buona salute, attributi che nel mondo euroamericano sono invece espressi socialmente da un corpo magro. Ossessionato dalla magrezza, il modello etico-estetico euroamericano ha quindi prima stigmatizzato e poi medicalizzato la grandezza fisica dei polinesiani, rendendola malata. Ha infatti attribuito al peso del corpo dei tongani la responsabilità dell'alto tasso di malattie non trasmissibili, celando le cause strutturali che incidono sulla malnutrizione della popolazione. Dichiarati fuori misura dagli indici europei, i corpi polinesiani si trovano così al centro di un'emergenza sanitaria, incarnando le contraddizioni di un sistema culturale biomedico che prescrive norme alimentari e sanitarie culturalmente incompetenti. Lo studio etnografico del contesto tongano apre perciò ad una riflessione più ampia sulle politiche globali per la salute, sui meccanismi di potere e controllo dei corpi e sull'efficacia di politiche universali in contesti particolari.‎
