‎"Depuis “Anthropo-logiques”, “Sens et puissance” et “le Pouvoir sur scène”, Georges Balandier s'efforce, après avoir contribué en France au renouvellement de l'anthropologie africaniste, de théoriser son expérience, de la mettre au service des chercheurs et des praticiens, en affinant ses concepts ou en entreprenant une élucidation nouvelle de ceux qui lui paraissent nécessaires à une continuation sans cesse vivifiée des sciences sociales. Ce livre – “le Détour” – prend sa place dans cette « mise en scène » dont “Histoire d'autres” nous traçait la genèse, nous révélait les intentions profondes liées à l'autobiographie intellectuelle de l'auteur et nous annonçait les prolongements. Son originalité tient à ce que, apparemment hors expérience ethnologique de terrain, mais aussi sans se concentrer sur un ou des concepts, il propose une démarche, précisément le détour par l'anthropologie, pour saisir et comprendre deux concepts et les réalités qu'ils recouvrent : le pouvoir d'une part et la modernité d'autre part... Si Balandier esquisse une comparaison entre le pouvoir monarchique en Europe occidentale sous la féodalité et le pouvoir politique dans certains despotismes africains, c'est à une réflexion sur le pouvoir – et, comme l'indique l'introduction, sur le politique – qu'il veut nous inciter..."
