A very scarce and crisp boudoir photo of the aftermath of the 1883 Astoria fire which shows the fire still smoldering above the ashes of what is now 13th and Exchange Street.
Astoria OR: S.B. Crow Photographer Cor. Benton and Squemoqua Sts. 1883. Oblong boudoir sepia-tinted photo image mounted on card stock 4.75 x 8.5 in. printed photographers’ logo on verso slight edgewear excellent image w/ lots of contrast. This excellent original photograph was taken just after the 1883 fire the first of two major fires to strike Astoria which was struck again in 1922. The image shows the smoldering fire with smoke blooming above what is now 13th and Exchange street. The fire started in the Clatsop Mill which was built along the shore with planer shavings and trash discarded below providing a ideal fuel for fires. In the 1880s all of downtown Astoria was built on pilings with no fire hydrants water buckets or fire brigades. By the time it was extinguished as shown in the photo the fire had destroyed all the structures on Commercial Street between 14th and 17th with damage totaling $ 2 million. Crow 1853-1925 had moved to Astoria in 1882 and would continue as photographer there until the end of the 19th century before moving to Portland OR. [Boston Fire Fighting]
Signed Manuscript Letter Regarding a Plan for Fighting Fire in Boston.
<p>Letter sheets 8" x 12" 3 pages plus integral address leaf. Extensive tape repairs to folds mostly archival tape but some regular tape too which has caused a little browning in areas long tear obscures writers signature but partially visible creased normal aging and browning remnant of wax seal; otherwise good or better. The letter is to Boston Mayor Josiah Quincy 1772-1864 a future head of Harvard and served eight years in Congress. It appears after becoming Boston's mayor he sent delegates to New York and Philadelphia to study fire fighting techniques in those cities. The author of this letter read about this mission and sent Mayor Quincy a lengthy letter on the subject. The probable author is Solon Robinson 1803-1880 although his signature is partially obscured by a tear. However on the back page a smudged docketed note identifies him as Solon Robertson or Robinson. Robinson was a writer and would become a well known Indiana pioneer. In any case the author would suggest a far more modern system for fighting fires than the existing practice of engines carrying water to fires which would become useless when the water ran out. he proposed putting lead aqueduct pipes "laid deep underground and leading to every part of the city." While her does not use the term fire hydrants the water would be accessed from locked iron covers that would serve that function. ABN.</p>

Situated next to and within the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains Altadena has long resisted annexation to Pasadena though that city has taken 46 "bites" of it over the years seeking tax revenues. That independent spirit is reflected in the mosaic of ethnic diversity that made Altadena one of the most integrated communities in Southern California. San Francisco & Los Angeles CA: Clinton Johnson 1906. Ten albumen mounted stereoview photos sized 6.4 x 3.25 in. mounted on 7 x 3.5 in. flat gray studio board mimeographed typescript title labels mounted on all versos most images w/ photographer’s imprint w/in the negative at lower fore-edge all w/ rounded corners very minor edgewear still a NF grouping. This outstanding group of very scarce albumen Woodbury-type stereograph photos vividly capture the widespread damage from the April 18 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires which destroyed over 80% of the city of San Francisco which at the time was the largest city on the West Coast. Nearly three-fourths of the population were left homeless and makeshift refugee camps in Golden Gate Park the Presidio the Panhandle and the beaches between Ingleside and North Beach operated for years after the disaster as the city rebuilt. Reconstruction and commercial activities began almost immediately with a couple of these images showing the roadways largely cleared of debris with piles of rubble and devastation spreading into the distance. Many of the images show gutted buildings advertising signs faintly visible in the ruined brick facades and immense piles of masonry and smoking ruins. One of the images capture groups of men hunkering down reading papers smoking and largely shell-shocked waiting in the refugee line for aid. The historic James Lick Baths are depicted in ruins ine one of the images and were rebuilt following the disaster utilizing as much of the original structure as possible in order to remain in operation and the facade was simplified from the original Richardson Romanesque Revival to Renaissance Revival and would operate as one of five public baths from 1906 to 1920. The structure was later converted to the People’s Laundry in operation until 1973. Another of the stereoviews depicts the remnants of the McCormick Hotel before it would later be destroyed along with all of the surrounding ruins by the US Army Corps of Engineers. In fact one sergeant of the battalion narrowly escaped death as the building collapsed while he was placing the charge in the basement. Johnson 1875-1948 appears in street directories in Los Angeles as photographer from 1896-1906 but appears on no census or business trade listings for the period and also managed to eschew registering for the draft. His stereograph series for the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake & Fire appears to be relatively uncommon and the only major institutional holdings are in the Bancroft library with 39 BANC PIC 1905.02074-.02118--STER however nearly all of the images in this collection are not represented. In addition these images correspond mostly closely in format to the Bancroft’s version which were issued with decorative printed boards and captions rubber stamped below while these do not bear the printed boards and captions are mounted on versos. An exceptional salesman sample photo album with 36 linen-backed silver gelatin photographs for O.J. Childs Co. fire engines primarily pumpers as well as other fire fighting equipment from this historic fire fighting equipment manufacturers.

Fire Apparatus 138 Liberty ca. 1919-1922. 4to. 36 leaves unnumbered. linen-backed silver gelatin photos some hinged most negative numbers w/in negative at lower fore-edge all w/ typed captions & identifying text on versos a few w/ caption on recto below the image. Contemporary black-simulated calf vinyl 3-ring loose-leaf binder rounded corners yapp fore-edges minor edgewear & fraying to some of the linen backing on images minor occasional creasing indications of use wear & bumping to covers still a VG exemplar. This uncommon salesman sample photo album includes excellent original photographs of many significant O.J. Childs Co. fire engines and firefighting equipment manufactured in Utica NY following World War I. These factory images encompass Type “B†Triple Combination on REO chassis; Triple Combination Pump Chemical & Hose Car on Federal 1 1/2 ton chassis; Straight Chemical Equipment o 1921 Brookway 1 1/2 ton chassis; and many other variations thereof. O.J. Childs built their own engines like American-La France because commercial truck engines not only lacked the torque but also the endurance to drive a fire pump for hours without overheating or damaging pistons connecting rods and valves. The images include fire engines supplied to the Morristown NJ Basking Ridge NJ Winsted CT Orenda Hose Co. Griffith IN East Greenwich NJ Mt. Carmel PA Loch Sheldrake NY and many others. Also used by the Childs’ Co. customers were such manufacturers as Dodge-Graham Ford pleasure chassis Packard Model EX White 20-45 Chassis a Ward-La France and many more. Orlando J. Childs organized the O.J. Childs Co. Fire Apparatus in 1899 to take over the business of the Utica Fire Extinguisher Co. who were best known for their chemical fire extinguishers designed and patented originally in 1896-97 by William Pomfret and Thomas Keating. They quickly began actively selling fire extinguishers to businesses individuals and even specialized on fire extinguishers for early automobile enthusiasts during the Brass Era who suffered frequent engine fires. After producing their first Triple Combination Pump Wagon about 1910 they quick espanced into ready-made chemical tank truck fire-engines for rural fire departments. Wallace Childs acquired the Foamite Firefoam Co. in New York in 1922 and in 1926 the entire company was acquired and became a subsidiary of American-La France Fire Engine Co. Public Trial of Milner's Fire Resisting Safes
Oxford: No Publisher 1848. Printed ticket approximately 90mm x 60mm in size no publisher or place but almost certainly Oxford. Remnant of glue where once stuck in an album to reverse otherwise fairly bright and clean. Signed to foot. Dated Thursday March 16th 1848 it admits the bearer and friends to the 'public trial' of a Milner fire resistant safe in Mr. F. Symonds's Close opposite Worcester College in Oxford commencing at 11am. Thomas Milner and later with his son William started producing standard safes and strong boxes. They then became pioneers in fire-resistant safes securing patents for innovative insulation techniques such as using asbestos mica or alum to generate steam inside the safe during a fire protecting its contents. The company gained international acclaim at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 where their safes were showcased and tested live for fire resistance. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 64mo Oblong. The Case of the Merchants-Sufferers in the Late Dreadful Fire by the Burning of Sugar Ginger Oil and Sarsarilla caption title

A rare leaflet lobbying Parliament on behalf of British merchants who had recently lost £22500 worth of sugar ginger oil and sasparilla in a great fire. The merchants had just recently imported the goods paying approximately £3000 in customs. In the present document the merchants petition the House of Commons to allow them to import goods duty-free up to the value of the customs of the goods destroyed. This is among the earliest examples of commercial lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. Seattle: Journal Publishing Co 1889. First Edition. Single leaf. Good. 11 x 18 in. P. 1 printed recto only. Age toned single mellowed horizontal crease five-inch vertical closed tear from the top edge with aged cello tape repair verso small edge chips. Single-page issue of the short-lived Seattle Morning Journal published the day after the fire leading with the headline: "IN ASHES Seattle Sorely Visited by Fearful Fire." With their headquarters destroyed the Journal staff had temporarily moved into the printing office of Benjamin Baker Dearborn. <p>While the competing but long-established Post-Intelligencer on the same day incorrectly attributed the origin of the fire to an overturned glue pot in McGaugh's sign shop the Journal reports here "It is learned that the fire started in the carpenter shop under the sign works. A workman was melting glue with a gasoline lamp and the lamp exploded." This report has withstood historical scrutiny but has gone unrecognized.<br /> <p>Seattle's commercial Daily Trade Journal was started in 1888 but within a year had changed owners dropped "Trade" from its name and expanded focus to include daily local events. The Seattle Directory for 1889 lists the editor as E. W. S. Tingle. While the self-described Democratic-leaning paper survived the Great Fire the paper was only printed into the mid-1890s.Meany Newspapers of Washington Territory 48-49.<p>A very scarce item of Seattleana. Conrad'; second 'Fireman's Address. Written at the request of the Association for the Relief of Disabled Firemen' by 'Hon. Robert T. Conrad'; third 'Address of Philip S. White Esq.' Very Good.<br /> <br /> The ceremony seeks to make amends for Philadelphia's long history of antipathy to Irish Catholics. Conrad had been elected Mayor of Philadelphia on a Know-Nothing platform that capitalized on anti-Irish sentiment. But he says here "Whatever prejudices may have existed in regard to fireman sic have disappeared before the favorable evidence of the past and present conduct and character." Also a poet and writer Conrad composed a poem for the occasion printed in the second column. <br /> Praising the Company in column three was a leading temperance advocate Philip S. White. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original Ottoman manuscript historical document. 28x21,5 cm. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 10 lines on 1 p. Signed, and three Ottoman stamps. During the Haydarpasa Fire in 1922, the warning about the Jewish resident of Beyoglu Vitali Efendi's house on Haydarpasa, Mandira Street, where the windows were broken and they were not fitted. The aforementioned warning was prepared by Vitali Efendi's tenant "Abulafya". Transcription in Turkish: "Dersaadet Kâtîb-i Adlîligi Memûriyet-i Valâsina: Efendim, Beyoglu'nda, Tozkoparan'da Bahar Apartmani'nda mukîm Mösyö Vitali Bahar'in Haydarpasa'da, Mandira Sokagi'nda 80 numero ile mudkîm bir bab hanesinde müstecîren ikâmet etmekteyim. Geçen hafta vuku' cevelân harikte, harikin tesîrâti ile hanenin pencerelerinde mevcut camlar kirilip harap olmustur. Kendisine...". The fire in Haydarpasa 1922 came to be known in history as "the Fire of Haydarpasa Çayir", because it broke out in one of the houses in Çayirbasi and spread further. It broke out on July 29, 1922.

Japan.: 星野嘉吉. Hoshino Kakichi. Meiji 28 1895. Black and white illustrations foldout illustration 20 x 14cm 8pp unpaginated. Slight fold crease at the centre else a lovely clean and tight copy. This advertisement catalogue of Japanese fire pumps was published in 1895 with delicately fine illustrations. The pumps are manufactured by Hoshino Kakichi Factory in Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima prefecture. The catalogue shows a black and white illustration of the factory compound as well as 6 types of fire pumps. Each pump is illustrated with its specification information including how far water spray can reach. 3 of them have 2 wheels and the rest with 4 wheels. In its foreword the owner claims that it is necessary to have a fire pump at hand as houses in the area are venerable for fire due to their thatched roofs. Without date or place. London Fire Force circa 1943. On one side of piece of 41 x 20.5 cm paper with lines and indications in light and dark blue red and green. In fair condition on aged paper with creasing and one closed tear towards the head. The map has Trafalgar Square at its head with the note that the two 'Basins' carry '40000 Galls. each' and Parliament Square at its foot. Whitehall and Parliament Street connect the two on the right of the map and to the left of the map is the lake in St James's Park: '200000 Galls Underground Tank Pumping Station 1400 Galls Pump 15 foot Gravity Main from Serpentine'. Also marked on the map are 'Inlet connections for L.F.F. Pumps and Pits' '6 Signle Outlet Suction Hydrants Round Thread' and 'Two 6 foot Steel Pipes in Subway Also under Embankment in Subway'. Down the centre of the map are the government buildings: the Admiralty Treasury Downing Street Foreign and Colonial Offices India Office and Home Office Office of Works Board of Education Board of Trade and Ministry of Health. Marie Blaze de Bury or Baroness Rose Blaze de Bury or Marie Pauline Rose Blaze de Bury 1813-1894 published a number of works 5 novels 6 works of non-fiction and a book of poetry under the pseudonyms Hamilton Murray and Arthur Dudley. She was a Scottish-born political writer educated in France and was notably opposed to the rule of Napoleon and there were reports that she was an agent for Austria or England. In 1844 she married the writer Henri Blaze de Bury who she had met in 1840 and they resided for most of their lives in Paris. Not in Sadleir or Wolff. And apparently uncommon: Huntington Berkeley UCLA Cambridge National Library of Scotland and University of Bremen only in OCLC. Knight I have taken a Survey of a house in Bordentown belonging to Isabella Neilson. description 30 feet front by 25 one story appears to be built of good materials and in good repair perhaps cost when new 500 Dollars it stands on the East Side of said Town near the premises of Bonnparl their is a wheelwright Shop and black smith within 15 or 20 yards of the house otherwise tolerably safe has been built about 12 years."</p>

Effect of Earthquake Fire on San Francisco Apr. 18/06. Series of Thirty-One Original Photographs Taken by an Unknown Photographer
San Francisco 1906. Thirty-one silver gelatin prints measuring 4 x 3 inches with four accompanying sheets measuring 8 x 5 ½ inches identifying the images. Also included is the original envelope to an illegible recipient or possibly crediting the images. Fading to images else about fine very good minus overall. Many photographers amateur and professional alike took to the streets of San Francisco to document devastation caused by the earthquake and subsequent fire of 1906. Collected here are thirty-one images taken by one such photographer - likely an amateur based on the image quality and perspectives. What is unusual about the collection here is that the photographer took meticulous notes on each image and the images as found in a rather illegible envelope included several sheets explaining the location of each image. The photographer travelled through most of downtown with varied locations represented. The title is likely misleading as the fire raged for several days and the pictures were likely taken several days after the 18th of April. The envelope has the name “Mrs H. Thof illegible†which suggests that perhaps the photographer was a woman or possibly that these were given to the same as a gift by another photographer. Overall a scarce survival of images of which we find no other copies. unknown
