Von Bertalanffy a d'abord travaillé à Vienne puis à Londres, et enfin au Canada et aux États-Unis. - Bertalanffy est influencé par le mouvement cybernétique. Une lecture attentive de la première version, en français, de la Théorie générale des systèmes, publiée chez Dunod en 1973, montre que Bertalanffy revendique l'antériorité de sa théorie par rapport à la cybernétique. Professeur de mathématiques au MIT depuis 1919, Norbert Wiener a collaboré avec Arturo Rosenblueth du Harvard Medical School et avec l'ingénieur Julian Bigelow à partir de 1940. Après avoir travaillé au développement d'appareils de pointage automatique pour canons antiaériens, ils en arrivent à la conclusion que « pour contrôler une action finalisée (orientée vers un but), la circulation de l'information nécessaire à ce contrôle doit former une boucle fermée permettant d'évaluer les effets de ses actions et de s'adapter à une conduite future grâce aux performances passées ». C'est la découverte de la boucle de rétroaction négative ou positive applicable sur les machines et, selon Rosenblueth, sur les organismes vivants. C'est la naissance de ce que Wiener appelle la cybernétique (Wiener, 1947) qui a pour but principal l'étude des régulations chez les organismes vivants et les machines construites par l'homme. Peu à peu, les recherches foisonnent sur le sujet. Des équipes interdisciplinaires se forment et tentent de généraliser ces principes à différents secteurs tels la sociologie, les sciences politiques ou la psychiatrie. Les travaux se multiplient et « la nécessité de faire exécuter par des machines certaines fonctions propres aux organismes vivants, contribue, en retour, à accélérer les progrès des connaissances sur les mécanismes cérébraux »8. C'est la naissance de la bionique et le début des recherches sur l'intelligence artificielle avec comme chef de file Warren McCulloch, en 1959. Le modèle de croissance individuelle publié par von Bertanlanffy en 1934 est largement utilisé dans les modèles biologiques et existe en plusieurs variantes. Une version plus générale est proposée par F. J. Richards en 1959. Le modèle de croissance est une équation différentielle dans la tradition plus récente des modèles démographiques, également employés pour modéliser le surplus de production (biomasses plutôt que nombre d'individus ou taille des individus). ‎This major interdisciplinary study re-examines the political thought of John Milton, one of the celebrated proponents of the 'Commonwealth and Free State' that was established in England in the mid-seventeenth century. Walker shows that in his epic poem, Paradise Lost (1667), Milton presents a heterodox Protestant vision of politics. This vision differs radically from the vision of politics presented by republicans from Aristotle to Machiavelli, and by Milton himself in his major political prose. The study is based on close readings of primary texts and scholarship in literary criticism, philosophy, theology, and the history of political thought. It is thus a powerful challenge to the current consensus on Milton's republicanism, his Christian humanism, and the shape of his oeuvre. It is, in addition, an important contribution to our understanding of a tradition of political thought that continues to inform modern republics. Dr William Walker is Senior Lecturer in the School of English, Media & Performing Arts at the University of New South Wales. He completed an Honours BA and MA in English literature at the University of Western Ontario, and a PhD in English literature at The Johns Hopkins University. Simbolicamente rilegato in rosso, il colore della rivoluzione, il manoscritto di Oper und Drama fu completato il 10 gennaio del 1851 e spedito all'amico Theodor Uhlig, critico musicale e fervente sostenitore di Wagner, con la dedica: "Rossa, o amico, è la mia teoria!". Il volume era nato come un articolo di ampie dimensioni sull'opera moderna, ma crebbe a dismisura tra le mani di Wagner, ed apparve a Lipsia alla fine di quell'anno in tre tomi. Sebbene ne curasse la ristampa altre due volte, nel 1869 e nel 1872, con correzioni e l'eliminazione di vari riferimenti polemici, dopo la prima edizione Wagner sentì il bisogno di prendere le distanze dal suo maggiore trattato teorico, senz'altro anche influenzato dal pensiero di Schopenhauer, che lo portò a rivedere in parte la propria concezione della musica come mezzo dell'espressione al servizio del dramma. Questa nuova edizione italiana ricostruisce filologicamente l'intero tragitto editoriale dell'opera, e la propone per la prima volta al lettore non solo nella sua integralità ma anche nel suo divenire. Il testo principale qui tradotto segue quello dell'ultima edizione (che Wagner giudicò definitiva), riportando in nota le parti inedite del manoscritto fatte conoscere da Klaus Kropfinger nella sua riedizione dell'edizione del 1851, nonché le principali varianti introdotte da Wagner nelle edizioni successive, riscontrate direttamente sugli originali.‎
