Form follows structure. La struttura delle forme prodotte dall'uomo
ill., br. Da cosa dipende la forma di un'architettura o di un'infrastruttura? Che cosa, in ultima analisi, la determina? Una possibile risposta, ancora diffusa e radicata nel sentire comune, è quella sintetizzata dal celebre motto modernista «Form Follows Function», un principio spiccatamente pratico e razionale che lega la forma di un oggetto o di un manufatto alla sua funzione. Nel De architectura, ovvero nel trattato di teoria dell'architettura più antico di cui disponiamo, Vitruvio aveva associato già più di duemila anni fa il concetto di bellezza (venustas) a quello della destinazione d'uso (utilitas). Tuttavia, il celebre teorico romano aveva inserito questa coppia di princìpi in una triade, associandola all'idea di solidità e stabilità strutturale (firmitas). Non sarebbe dunque corretto affermare che la modernità (o, meglio, una certa versione stereotipata e funzionalista dell'architettura) abbia attribuito un'eccessiva enfasi al concetto di funzione, ma si dovrebbe prendere atto del fatto che essa ha dimenticato o dato per scontato il terzo elemento che sosteneva la teoria vitruviana, ovvero la struttura. Nessuna forma può esistere o rimanere in piedi se non viene in qualche modo sostenuta. Ma c'è di più: il principio strutturale che sorregge un oggetto quasi sempre determina in maniera sostanziale anche la sua forma. In questa prospettiva, il presente volume raccoglie alcune riflessioni che affrontano il tema del rapporto tra forma e struttura. Emerge così un intreccio di spunti, basati su esperienze diversificate nei campi della ricerca storica e della pratica professionale, attraverso i quali è possibile delineare una modalità altra di concepire la forma a partire dalla struttura, e forse persino un'idea alternativa di modernità.
