br. Perché la storia della Russia è caratterizzata dalla presenza di governi dispotici, fino a giungere al socialismo reale? E per quale motivo, invece, proprio in Inghilterra sono nate per la prima volta istituzioni rispettose della libertà individuale? Per Richard Pipes, per rispondere a queste domande occorre prendere in considerazione la forma e la storia della proprietà privata. I diritti di proprietà sono stati l'argine più saldo per limitare il potere dello Stato e consentire alle istituzioni liberali di evolvere e prosperare nel mondo occidentale. Per questo motivo, in un Paese come l'Inghilterra i diritti di proprietà e il governo parlamentare sono progrediti di pari passo, mentre in Russia le restrizioni alla proprietà hanno garantito per centinaia di anni il mantenimento di regimi autoritari. Dopo aver ricostruito la storia della proprietà e dimostrato sulla base degli esempi contrastanti di questi due Paesi quanto sia stretta la correlazione tra proprietà e libertà, Pipes analizza gli sviluppi del ventesimo secolo, nel quale i governi - in nome della giustizia sociale e del "bene comune" - hanno abolito o calpestato i diritti di proprietà.

brossura Composto nel 1908 e rivisto nel 1920, "L'umorismo" è un libro a doppio fondo: un saggio accademico che nasconde il nocciolo della poetica di Pirandello, come testimonia la dedica «alla buon'anima di Mattia Pascal». Il campo di applicazione dell'umorismo non è la natura, ma l'uomo, in quanto dotato di desideri e volontà: sulle sue miserie fa presa il "sentimento del contrario", costringendo il lettore a rimanere sospeso tra riso e pianto. Pirandello rivela nel saggio come sia la compassione a guidarlo nella rappresentazione dei personaggi, allontanandosi nettamente dalle altre declinazioni del ridicolo (il comico, il grottesco, il satirico). Questa edizione dell'"Umorismo", che propone il testo del 1908, mette in luce la vastità delle ispirazioni di Pirandello e insieme il legame tra letteratura ed esperienza umana, dimostrando che il saggio è anche un'autobiografia intellettuale, l'attraversamento appassionato dei modelli di una vita.

Ne emerge una visione critica dei sistemi economici e politici, di antropizzazione e di colonizzazione culturale, innescati dalle dinamiche del capitalismo globale. Questo libro si propone di indagare alcune di queste trasformazioni, inquadrandole in riferimento alle prospettive di ricerca offerte dagli studi culturali e postcoloniali, a partire dall'analisi di una serie di pratiche estetiche legate al suono (sound art, paesaggio sonoro) che nascono dall'esperienza delle geografie in emersione dal contesto post-globale. Aree rurali, luoghi abbandonati, zone ai margini si rivelano attraverso modalità di ascolto che le riconfigurano come spazi estetici e critici inusitati e aumentati, attraversati dal suono non solo come strumento, ma come metodo e dispositivo di indagine.

Questo libro (il cui titolo richiama quello di un importante film del regista Douglas Sirk) raccoglie e mette insieme, in un ordine sistematico, gli scritti di cinema di uno dei più importanti autori del cinema italiano degli ultimi quattro decenni. Dalla lettura di questi saggi di Salvatore Piscicelli (recensioni dei film usciti nel nostro paese nel corso degli anni Settanta e pubblicati sull'"Avanti!", articoli e saggi di più vasto respiro scritti per una rivista, "Cinemasessanta", o altri nati da occasioni diverse di riflessione su figure come Chaplin o Rossellini o sul rapporto fra cinema e ideologia, su temi rilevanti come cinema e psicoanalisi, o sui film cinesi di kung fu o, ancora, sulla metodologia storiografica del cinema o su registi francesi e del Nord Europa ecc.), viene fuori un profilo esemplare di cineasta integrale, critico e autore nello stesso tempo. Questo libro dà modo, da un lato, di ricostruire un modo generazionale di vivere e praticare il cinema (quello che appunto nutre gli interessi del critico a partire dagli anni Settanta) e, insieme, dall'altro, di comprendere la lunga e vivace formazione del futuro regista. Dal 1980 in poi, mentre dirige film e interpreta le tendenze del cinema contemporaneo secondo le sue opzioni creative, Piscicelli, in filigrana, non smette di osservare criticamente come il cinema evolve in rapporto alla società.

This book not only tells the story of Harper herself who was born in Canada and worked for many years as a servant but also interviews 'Harperites' who still remember her and the busines she created. As a believer in Christian Science she fought an industry which promoted and sold dangerous beauty aids and processes; by contrast her shops fucused on providing skin and scalp treatments to help release a customer's inner beauty her own long floor-length hair - as shown in the frontispiece of this book - was one of her best advertisements. XII22702174 pp. The last 174 pages are occupied by Appell's prize winning memoire 'Sur les int�grales de fonctions a multiplicateurs et leur application au d�veloppement des fonctions ab�liennes en s�ries trigonom�triques.' � First printing of Poincar� celebrated landmark paper which contains the first mathematical exposition of the chaos theory in dynamical systems. "The importance and value of the new mathematical door opened in the present paper is inestimable". Diacu Celestial Entounters P. 30. In 1887 Oscar II King of Sweden advised by G�sta Mittag-Leffler established a prize for anyone who could find the solution to the three-body problem. Three years later Poincar� was awarded the price for the publication of the present paper. <br><br>The paper in itself is of the utmost importance both due to its solution to the three-body problem its foundation of chaos theory and mathematical history in general but it also proved fundamental in providing the basis for Poincar� acclaimed Les methods nouvelles de la m�canique c�leste published in three papers during 1892-1899.<br><br>"The three body problem is one of the most celebrated problems in celestial mechanics. Like many good problems it is easy to state; three particles move in space under their mutual gravitational attraction; given their initial conditions determine their subsequent motion." Grattan- Guinness P. 628.<br><br>In his research on the three-body problem Poincar� became the first person to discover a chaotic deterministic system. Given the law of gravity and the initial positions and velocities of the only three bodies in all of space the subsequent positions and velocities are fixed - this concludes that the three-body system is deterministic. However Poincar� found that the evolution of such a system is often chaotic in the sense that a small disturbance in the initial state such as a slight change in one body's initial position might lead to a fundamentally different later state. If the slight change isn't detectable by our measuring instruments then we are not able to predict which final state will occur. So Poincar�'s research proved that the problem of determinism and the problem of predictability are separate problems.<br><br>The gravitational problem of three bodies entered the mathematical canon on the publication of Newton's Principia in 1687. Newton took the first steps in the definition and study of the problem of the movements of three massive bodies subject to their mutually unpredictable gravitational attractions. Newton did his observations in relation to the motion of the Moon under the gravitational influence of the Earth and the Sun know known as lunar theory. <br>Jean d'Alembert and Alexis Clairaut are known to have coined the term "three-body problem" Probl�me des Trois Corps in 1747.<br><br>Since its formulation by Newton most leading mathematicians have been fascinated by the problem; between 1750 and 1900 more than 800 papers have appeared on the subject the most famous and influential by far being the present. hardcover

Poincar� called these series asymptotic while Stieltjes continued to use the term semiconvergent. Poincar� took up the subject in order to further the solution of linear differential equations. Impressed by the usefulness of divergent series in astronomy he sought to determine which were useful and why. he succededed in islolating and formulating the essential property.Poincar� applied his theory of asymptotic series to diffrential equations and theree are many such uses in his treatise on celestical mechanics 'Les Methodes nouvelles de la mechanique c�leste". In applying mathematics to physics Poisson stated it was necessary at first to employ abstraction and "in this regard Lagrange has gone as far as possible in replacing physical ties by equations between coordinates." Now however "along with this admirable conception" it is necessary to "construct physical mechanics the principle of which is to reduce everything to molecular actions."
