ill., br. L'arte visiva è qui colta dalle origini ai giorni nostri nei suoi sviluppi essenziali; dalle diverse tradizioni espressive, alla emancipazione che contraddistingue la modernità. Pur in questo evidente cambiamento Nicola Vitale riassume, con semplicità e chiarezza, i cicli epocali in cui l'arte sembra ripetere analoghe strutture profonde. La fase nascente (arte greca arcaica, bizantina, moderna) ha caratteristiche reintegrative che riportano la coscienza dell'uomo a una pienezza originaria. Ma nelle fasi successive l'arte occidentale decade, diventando celebrazione mondana, quindi lacerazione e, recentemente, provocazione. Questo ciclo per cui l'arte ricomincia costantemente da capo mette in evidenza come oggi gli strumenti e le modalità con cui si realizza e interpreta l'arte siano inadeguati a comprendere il cambio di paradigma in atto. L'estenuata forma analitica in cui siamo immersi non è infatti commensurabile alle nuove esigenze spontanee di ritrovare una pienezza esistenziale, che nell'arte visiva si esprime con lo splendore delle immagini. Bellezza profonda che prelude, in una forma già compiuta con l'opera di alcuni artisti indipendenti (da Hopper e Balthus come precursori), a una trasformazione radicale della cultura. Nella seconda parte l'autore mette in evidenza quali sono i principali impedimenti ideologici per comprendere tale passaggio, avvenuto da tempo nella scienza, in un sorprendente riavvicinamento tra materie scientifiche e umanistiche, evidente nell'ormai consueto utilizzo da parte di matematici e fisici di criteri estetici per la formalizzazione di teoremi e leggi della natura.

Il "De Architectura" si presenta come un trattato eclettico - un tentativo di costituire una sintesi organica delle acquisizioni teoriche greco-ellenistiche e dei dati desunti dalla pratica dell'ars aedificatoria - e nello stesso tempo come un testo canonico, summa articolata e composita, ricca di innumerevoli implicazioni e suggestioni, comunque unica testimonianza dell'elaborazione di teorie architettoniche dell'antichità classica. L'opera di Vitruvio anticipa in senso umanistico la centralità della figura dell'architetto e della sua arte, ed esprime come presupposto irrinunciabile l'esigenza di un'armonica sintesi del sapere e della conoscenza che lo renderanno non un semplice organizzatore e codificatore di uno spazio, ma il suo interprete ed ermeneuta. A partire dal Quattrocento in avanti il trattato diverrà la fonte interpretativa, il modello interlocutorio e il presupposto ispiratore dei fondamenti teorici dell'arte architettonica, tanto che Vincenzo Scamozzi, architetto e trattatista veneto del Cinquecento, dopo una lettura attenta ed assidua dell'opera afferma che Vitruvio "ha ragionato di tutte, o almeno le più difficili e bisognevoli parti dell'architettura e bisogni dell'architetto, il che se molti conoscessero, non così facilmente si vanterebbero di essere architetti, che appena sanno quello che gli appartiene".
