Très rares sont les manuscrits des études et recherches de Pasteur. Beau et intéressant texte au sujet d’une opinion de Joseph Lister qui fut le précurseur en matière de méthodes antiseptiques. « Quoique j’ai eu l’honneur d’être en correspondance avec le Docteur Lister, je n’ai pas lu tous les travaux et notes de Lister. Si Lister, comme vient de le dire Mr Lefort [pour le chirurgien Léon Le Fort], pense que les globules du pus ne peuvent se former que sous l’influence des organismes microscopiques, je crois devoir dire que l’ensemble de nos expériences sur la formation du pus n’est pas d’accord avec cette opinion ; mais il n’est pas moins certain que la formation du pus sous l’influence des organismes microscopiques est sans comparaison pour l’abondance de ce pus avec ce qu’elle est s’il y a absence absolue des organismes. Je crois pouvoir ajouter qu’il en est de même touchant l’infection purulente, quant à son danger et à son intensité. Relativement à l’idée dominante dans la lecture de Mr Lefort sans vouloir la discuter et la juger en ce moment je ne puis m’empêcher d’ajouter qu’il y a huit jours Mr Sédillot [le chirurgien français Charles-Emmanuel Sédillot, précurseur de l'asepsie opératoire et promoteur de l'anesthésie au chloroforme ] a lu devant l’académie des sciences un travail, du quel il résultait que pour l’éminent chirurgien la théorie dite des germes peut expliquer les succès et les revers de la chirurgie. Je ne me permets pas de juger les réflexions de Mr Sédillot mais j’en constate l’existence et j’oserai dire que Mr Léon Lefort et Mr Sédillot sont bien près de s’entendre ou le devront...». En février 1874, le chirurgien écossais, Joseph Lister, écrivait à Pasteur: « Mes plus cordiaux remerciements pour m’avoir par vos brillantes recherches démontré la vérité de la théorie des germes de putréfaction et m’avoir ainsi donné le seul principe qui peut mener à bonne fin le système antiseptique. ».

Il barone Antoine Portal (Gaillac, 5 gennaio 1742 – Parigi, 23 luglio 1832) fu un celebre medico, anatomista, professore universitario, biologo, storico della medicina e scrittore francese. Professore di anatomia al Collège de France e poi al Jardin du roi, nonché fondatore dell’Académie Nationale de Médecine, fu il medico personale di tutti vari sovrani di Francia. La sua opera più importante fu l’Histoire de l’anatomie et de la chirurgie. Secondo Garrison-Morton, Portal “improved the obstetric forceps, [and] was a famous teacher in Paris”. Qui viene presentata la prima edizione stampata a Yverdon nel 1779 del suo celebre studio dedicato alla rabbia ed al modo di curarla. L’autore prende lo spunto dallo stato confusionale degli studi sulla materia e dalle cure utilizzate per trattarla spesso più legate a leggende e tradizioni popolari che a vere e proprie conoscenze mediche. Portal riordina così in modo corretto e sistematico le conoscenze scientifiche sull’argomento e propone cure reali ed efficaci coma l’immediata cauterizzazione delle ferite, l’utilizzo di preparati a base di antimonio, lo strofinamento con unguenti mercuriali ed anche una dieta a base di verdure. L’autore, fra i primi in assoluto, definisce la rabbia come una malattia del sistema nervoso, comparando la natura dell’agente infettivo a quello della sifilide, tubercolosi. In fondo al volume un’appendice bibliografica, contenente la serie delle “Ouvrages sur la rage et les traitmens divers contre cette maladie”.
