Connu sous le titre 'LExamen des esprits', cet ouvrage pionnier constitue, selon Garrison-Morton (n° 4964): "la première tentative systématique de corréler physiologie et psychologie" en cherchant à fonder les facultés intellectuelles sur des bases organiques et à orienter chacun vers les activités conformes à son tempérament naturel.Sinscrivant dans la tradition galénique des humeurs, Huarte propose une anthropologie novatrice, croisant médecine, pédagogie, philosophie et science de léducation. Il vise à identifier les fondements organiques des facultés intellectuelles et à orienter chaque individu vers les activités correspondant à son tempérament naturel. Comme le souligne Marc Fumaroli, "Huarte livre, sous une forme accessible aux non-spécialistes, les principaux aspects dune anthropologie humaniste de la variété des esprits, justifiant et expliquant la variété des styles » ('LÂge de léloquence', p. 127).Laudace de sa pensée, qui affirme le caractère organique de la raison, conteste la capacité de la philosophie naturelle à démontrer limmortalité de lâme et propose une analyse du tempérament de Jésus-Christ, suscita de vives controverses. Louvrage fut interdit par lInquisition au Portugal dès 1580, puis en Espagne en 1583.Traduit en six langues au XVIIe siècle, 'LExamen des esprits' connut une diffusion exceptionnelle en Europe et exerça une influence durable sur des penseurs majeurs tels que Cervantes, Montaigne, Descartes, Bacon, Charron, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Kant, Goethe et Hume...(Baudrier, IV, p. 92. E l'invecchiamento porta inevitabilmente a una degenerazione del cervello. A lungo si è creduto che ciò fosse responsabile di un graduale rallentamento nelle performance e della demenza.
