Auch hier ist jeder ins einzelne gehende Versuch, die Gesetze der Reproduktion und die Regeln des Vergessens auf bekannte Tatsachen und Annahmen der Nervenphysiologie - man denke an die "Gesetze" der Erregung, Bahnung und Hemmung - zurückzubeziehen, bis heute gescheitert, aber wieder berühren diese Mißerfolge die allgemeine Abhängigkeit des Gedächtnisses von seinen körperlichen Grundlagen nicht. L'auteur y esquisse à grands traits le tableau des temps primitifs, où les poètes et les héros ont pour ainsi dire le monopole de guérir les hommes, puis de l'époque moins reculée où les mages en Orient et les collèges de prêtres en Occident s'emparèrent de la science d'Esculape, au profit des intérêts religieux qu'ils représentaient. Il arrive bientôt à celle où la philosophie, s'emparant à son tour de la médecine, la transforme en une science exacte. Il fait le portrait d'Hippocrate, expose le système de Pythagore, parle d'Oribase et de Galien, émet sur les causes de la décadence de la médecine et des sciences naturelles à Rome et en Grèce des théories mal fondées, mais fort accréditées au XVe siècle, puis fait le récit de leur renaissance sous les Arabes et bientôt après dans l'Europe chrétienne.
