È quindi inevitabile che "In movimento", la sua autobiografia, sia innanzitutto una rassegna di passioni, descritte con la lucidità dello scienziato e l'audacia dello psiconauta, con la schiettezza del diagnosta e il gusto per la digressione di un dotto seicentesco. E sarà un piacere, per i lettori di Sacks, sentirlo parlare di sé: dell'ossessione per le moto e il sollevamento pesi, della dipendenza dalle amfetamine, del lacerante rapporto con il fratello schizofrenico e con la madre (il "più profondo e forse, in un certo senso, più vero della mia vita"), di quando disintegrò per l'ammirazione unita alla frustrazione un libro di Aleksandr Lurija, il fondatore della neuropsicologia e di quella "scienza romantica" a cui sarebbe sempre rimasto fedele. Alla fine, non si potrà evitare di riconoscere che Oliver Sacks è stato il più romanzesco di tutti i personaggi romanzeschi di cui ha scritto. Soprattutto, questo resoconto di studi e amicizie, legami sentimentali e debiti intellettuali, abitudini e fissazioni è un'ulteriore riprova che per Sacks il "delicato empirismo" di Goethe non era un semplice metodo di ricerca, ma uno stile di vita.

In (17,3x11,5 cm); (XIV), (2), 262, (2 b.) pp. Manca l'ultima carta di indice ma testo completo. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida. Piccolo difetto al dorso. Cornice in filetto ai piatti impressa a secco. Tagli rossi. Presenti alla prima ed ultima carta i due tipici timbri dei censori estensi che attestavano la libera circolazione dell'opera all'interno del territorio del Ducato Estense. Edizione "volgarizzata, e arricchita considerabilmente di note da un medico viniziano". Esempalre in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Edizione fra le meno comuni, 5 esemplari censiti in ICCU, di questo curioso e celebre studio del grande medico, neurologo e professore svizzero, Samuel Auguste André David Tissot. La sua opera influenzò ampiamente la visione negativa ed i pregiudizi legati agli effetti della masturbazione nei secoli seguenti. Noto neurologo calvinista protestante, medico, professore e consulente del Vaticano praticò nella città svizzera di Losanna. Scrisse opere dedicate alle malattie dei poveri, alla masturbazione, alle malattie dei letterati e dei ricchi, e sulle malattie nervose. Fu gli antesignani dello studio delle emicranie. Nel 1760, publicò il suo celebre studio sull'Onanisme,un trattato di medicina generale sui presunti effetti negativi della masturbazione. Citando casi di studio di giovani masturbatori tra i suoi pazienti a Losanna come base per il suo ragionamento, Tissot sostenne che lo sperma è un "olio essenziale" e "stimolo", che, quando ha perso dal corpo in grandi quantità, potrebbe causare "una sensibile riduzione di forza, di memoria e anche della ragione, visione offuscata, tutti i disturbi nervosi, tutti i tipi di gotta e reumatismi, indebolendo gli organi della generazione, provocando sangue nelle urine, disturbi dell'appetito, mal di testa e un gran numero di altri disturbi. " Il suo trattato fu presentato come un lavoro accademico-scientifico in un momento in cui la fisiologia sperimentale era praticamente inesistente. L'opera ebbe grande successo e venne ritenuta valida e vari argomenti di Tissot sono stati anche ripresi da luminari come Kant e Voltaire. Anche Napoleone teneva in grande considerazione Tissot. Opera non comune ed in buono-ottimo stato di conservazione.
