PHOTOGRAPHY GLASS LANTERN SLIDES
Lantern slides are positive transparent photographs made on glass and viewed with the aid of a “magic lantern†the predecessor of the slide projector. With exceptional detail and a rich tonal range lantern slide plates were commercially manufactured for home entertainment public lectures and photographic exhibitions from the 1860s to the 1950s.~~Around the time these images were taken the largely female immigrant workforce shut down the Everett Mills for 2 months in what is known as the Bread and Roses strike of 1912. The Industrial Workers of the World union supported the striking workers resulting in pay increases overtime pay and wide-ranging consequences for worker’s rights. ~~These glass lantern slides were produced by the Keystone View Company’s Education. They developed and sold Glass lantern slides to schools throughout the country along with stereoscopic views and equipment to view them. These slides depict the mass production of paper and fabric in Lawrence and Holyoke Massachusetts c.1916. ~~3 ¼†x 4†with black paper border. Each is labeled captioned and numbered 14-20. Mendville PA etc.: Keystone View Company 1934. Good. Sterograph 176 x 85 mm on gray card mount identified as "Tex 45" and "No. 34163." Ink number "9" on upper right corner. Scarce stereograph view "Texas State College for Women" as it became known in 1934 the name was changed to Texas Woman's University in 1957. The photo depicts the Administrative Building which is now known as the Old Main Building. The manufacturer Keystone View Company was a major distributor of stereographic images active from 1892 to 1963. The present item bears the Keystone number "TEX 45" suggesting that it formed part of a series of Texas stereoviews. Unlike many other contemporaneous Keystone products the present item does not have any text on the verso. There is an actual photograph of this image held in the Keystone-Mast Collection at UC Riverside; other than that we have found no other examples of it. <br /> <br /> From the Dorothy Sloan Collection of Women and Their Work. Stiff board with two bw. stereo photos mounted on a card with a slight curve as was issued to be inserted into a stereo-viewer 18 x 9 cm. card #904 verso with text sowing #33885 at top left very clean. A lovely example in the best of condition no flaws placed in a mylar protector. This shows two electrical tram cars in a line with two rickshaws adjacent waiting for customers. Perhaps the customers are now just using the less expensive tram that goes farther. Both images nearly identical a good example of an unusual trackless tram in early Singapore. Electrical poles are visible in the background. A rare example of an early electrical transportation in Singapore. . unknown

Complete with 30 numbered silver print stereo views 8 cm x 15.5 cm on gray Keystone mounts 9 cm x 18 cm with titles beneath the image and lengthy descriptions on the reverse. Views are housed in the original slipcase 19 cm x 12 cm x 5 cm Title publisher and bands gilt stamped on the spine of the slipcase. Nice collection of views of Yellowstone that follow the tourist route through the Park beginning at the Northern Pacific depot in Gardiner and then south through the Gate and onto Mammoth into the interior of the Park. "The Yellowstone Park trip via Gardiner gives the maximum of time at all points of interest. More than that: it is scheduled to bring the Tourist to each point at a convenient hour when the time of day will permit of a full and satisfactory inspection of the formations; it also allows a full-day at Mammoth Hot Springs at the Upper Basin Old Faithful Inn and at the Grand Canyon new Canyon Hotel. It affords ample time for rest for meals for social enjoyment at each of the hotels and lunching stations and gives opportunity for fishing and for side trips to many interesting points." - from a contemporary Northern Pacific guide. Reprinted from 1732, Ibrahim Muteferrika Edition. (See Ozege for it's original: 3048.). A very heavy set. Ibrahim Muteferrika printed Katib Celebi's well-known book on geography and cosmography 'Cihannuma' in 1732 by adding a supplement containing new information on astronomy and Ottoman geography and maps, in which he relied mostly on Ebu Bekir b. Behram el-Dimaski's (d. 1691) work on the Cihannuma. The appendix in which Muteferrika explained the 'old' and the 'new' world systems produced by Tycho Brahe, Copernicus and Descartes as well as Galileo's theories of the moving bodies was extracted from Edmond Pourchot's (1651 - 1734) well-known work 'Institutiones philosophicae'. Pourchot himself was a reknowned philosopher and was elected rector of the University of Paris seven times. The text compiled by Muteferrika on the heliocentric system would represent comprehensive Turkish text on this subject for a century. Katip Celebi's book of Cihannuma (Jihannuma. View of the World) is a geographical work that makes the first use, in Turkey, of European atlases and other sources.
