‎Vue lithographique rare du canal de Suez, publiée en supplément du journal "Graphic" du 2 Septembre 1882. Comme indiqué ci-dessous, cette vue a probablement été réalisée à une époque où les Britanniques cherchaient activement à acquérir des participations financières dans la Compagnie du canal de Suez, occupant l'Égypte et réprimant la révolte d'Urabi. Bien que le canal ait été achevé en 1869, la première décennie d'exploitation fut tumultueuse. Les travaux commencèrent sur les rives du futur Port-Saïd en avril 1859. Le creusement dura dix ans. Certaines sources estiment que plus de 30 000 personnes travaillaient sur le canal à tout moment, que plus de 1,5 million de personnes de divers pays y étaient employées et que des dizaines de milliers d'ouvriers périrent, dont beaucoup du choléra et d'épidémies similaires. Le canal fut ouvert sous contrôle français en novembre 1869. Après son ouverture, la Compagnie du canal de Suez connut des difficultés financières. Les travaux restants ne furent achevés qu'en 1871, et le trafic fut inférieur aux prévisions durant les deux premières années. Le canal eut un impact immédiat et considérable sur le commerce mondial. Associé au chemin de fer transcontinental américain achevé six mois plus tôt, il permit de faire le tour du monde en un temps record ...... bel exemplaire ... en trés bon état (very good condition). en trés bon état‎

‎Birds eye view of the Centennial buildings and grounds. . . large hand-coloured lithograph landscape view of Fairmount Park and the buildings and grounds of the Centennial Exposition with Philadelphia cityscape in the background.‎

‎Philadelphia PA: National Publishing Co. 1876. One oblong atlas folio hand-coloured lithograph sized 26 x 20.5 in. still retaining fairly wide borders printing above & below centered image w/ hand-coloured border some minor toning & aging from original backing minor tidemark to upper left corner edgewear slight tears very minor predation scuffing to blank right margin still a nice strong image retaining some of the original colouring. First edition variant issue of this scarce birds-eye view of the buildings and sites at the first World’s Fair in the United States celebrating the Centennial. This depicts the trees grass shrubs pedestrians horse-drawn carriages and walking paths with labels below for the Horticultural Hall Main Exhibition Building Memorial Hall Agricultural Hall Ladies Pavilion Machinery Hall and others. These beautiful birds-eye views were presented to subscribers of the “Centennial History†by sales agents who were also sent extra circulars and liberal commissions as indicated in the margins. These were apparently issued in different sizes and formats with the Huntington hand-coloured copy containing all the text including the imprint at the lower fore-edge and both the Huntington and American Antiquarian Society copies have smaller margins. Bourquin 1808-1897 was a Swiss-American pioneering Philadelphia lithographer who specialized in county maps and atlases but also was known for his innovative lithography and by 1876 maintained between 6 and 20 skilled lithographers to produce portraits and prints. ‎[Japon, Yokohama ?, vers 1890] Très beau spécimen en grand format (36 x 27 cm environ pour l'album et 26,5 x 20,5 cm pour les tirages). Complet. Très bel album très bien conservé malgré quelques chocs sur quelques bords et le dos de l'album manquant (bande de cuir), parfaitement solide et très décoratif. Très belle esthétique d'ensemble, superbe décor sur le premier plat (rare aussi beau et fin). Intérieur d'une grande fraîcheur. Beau coloris au pinceau à la main.‎

‎"Ces photographies – appelées Yokohama shashin car elles étaient proposées à Yokohama aux voyageurs à leur arrivée, marquèrent les esprits de l’époque pour la qualité exceptionnelle de leur mise en couleur. Elles sont un témoignage inestimable d’un Japon s’ouvrant alors au monde et riche d’un savoir-faire pictural unique. Dès la période Meiji, le Japon fut surnommé « the Land of Photography » et les photographies coloriées à la main étaient particulièrement appréciées en Occident. Produites pour les touristes, elles avaient alors bien plus de valeur que les estampes japonaises qui n’intéressaient guère la plupart des visiteurs." Cet album grand format était un exemplaire de grand luxe à l'époque, réservé aux touristes étrangers fortunés. Magnifique et rare spécimen grand format dans une très belle condition presque parfaite.‎

‎Louis Jean-Baptiste Say (Nantes, 30 janvier 1852 - Port-Say, 3 octobre 1915) est un explorateur NANTAIS. Fils de Louis Octave Say (1820-1857), raffineur de sucre, et d'Octavie Étienne (remariée à Eugène Janvier de La Motte), ainsi que le petit-fils des raffineurs de sucre Louis Say (1774-1840) et Jean-Baptiste Étienne (1795-1866). Enseigne de vaisseau, il est membre en 1876 dans l'expédition de Victor Largeau El Oued-Ghadames. Il reprend en 1877 les routes du sud à partir de Ouargla et s'avance jusqu'à Timassinin en passant par Aïn Taya et El Biodh. Il explore en détail les Gassi, des couloirs naturels qui traversent le Grand Erg. En 1886, il mène une expéditions dans la région d'Oudjda et des Beni-Snassen. Fondateur de Port-Say en 1905 en Algérie, il y meurt en 1915 ........ The birds-eye depicts the Guild’s Lake area of the grounds up and operating now bounded by Reed to Thurston Streets and 31st to 24th Streets in NW Portland. Prof. Willson fl. 1904-1920 began as a dance instructor with the Academy of Dancing located in the Hirsch Building but within a few years of the Exposition set up his own dance studio and was noted instructor of Waltzes. This card advertises the fact that couples could dance for .50¢ while an “Extra Lady†for .25¢ and even better for men in the very hot and humid Portland Pavilion they could dance without their coats in Shirt Waists. Caughey 1851-1925 was an Ohio Civil War veteran an itinerant chalk plate artist and had just created the year before in Feb. 1904 a Birds-Eye view reproduced over two pages in the Lewis and Clark Journal with noted birds-eye artist and cartographer Fred Routledge 1871-1936. Caughey began producing birds eye views in and around Portsmouth NH in the 1880’s and eventually became a commercial artist and newspaper editor in Portland Oregon where he would often produce images for the Mutual Label & Lithographic Co.
