'Zugologion' written in Greek letters on front cover. Slightly faded. A fine copy. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In Ottoman script. 52 p. is written of which apprx. 200 p., but it's finished and complete; one folding hand-drawn color map, and 3 tables. The report on the cholera occurring in Ürgüp in 1910, which was presented to the Inspectorate of Konya Sihhiye on October 16, 1910. Besides cholera, it contains information about diseases such as measles. 1329 (Hegira) written at the end of first 10-paged report. The second part contains title: Mecelle-i Memâlik-i Osmaniye'ye ait minvallere cevabât yazilarak Üsküp Kaymakamligi'na takdim olunan 'Müslüman Sihhiye' raporu [= Muslim health report submitted to the Ürgüp (Prokopi) District Governor]. This and following next chapters include general health and sanity registers on epidemics like 'frengi' (syphilis, pox), all kinds of 'humma' (pyrexia) and several others (almost more 15 titles) and give information about how often diseases are encountered in the region of Prokopi and Cappadocia. One folded map which is hand-drawn includes color markers as 'Ürgüp Bölgesi saglik haritasi' [= Prokopi region sanity and epidemic map]. Also it shows demographic and historical info about region. There are 3 statistical tables contain demographic, historical, religious info such 'Muslim' and 'Non-Muslim'. Maps and tables are perfectly drawn. Another chapter is 'Usul-i sihhiye', has all epidemics and their historical and demographic contexts, their cures etc. Book was written in a very nice hand-writing. Used black, blue, and red inks. Report was not published before such as that. Roumi: 1327 = Gregorian: 1910. The Ottoman land represented a bridge between Asia and Europe, which was destroyed by epidemic diseases that emerged in different periods. In the 19th century, the main source of epidemic was the cholera morbus that emerged in India in the lower Bengal delta between the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. At the beginning of the 19th century, the disease became a global threat. Cholera epidemic appeared for the first time in the Ottoman territory in 1822, and continued to emerge into intermediate outbreaks. Due to its geographical location, the cholera epidemic was easily spread to the Ottoman territory and caused great losses in the 19th century, when it became a global threat. At the beginning of the 20th century, still cholera was a serious problem. Prokopi is a settlement in Central Asia Minor, built on a plateau at an altitude of 1,200 m above sea level. It lies near the confluence of four tributary rivers of the Alys River (Kizilirmak), which flows to the north of Ürgüp, within about 10 km from the settlement. It has been claimed that the word Ürgüp is the Turkish version of the Greek name Prokopi. The latter is supposed to refer to St. Prokopios, although there is no evidence suggesting the existence of a namesake church. Levidis supported that the ancient name of the settlement was Osiana, which the traveller Texier (Charles) adopted as well. Ürgüp was inhabited by Muslims, Turkish-speaking Greek-Orthodox and some Armenians. Several conflicting opinions have been stated about the population. Farasopoulos talks about 15,000 Muslims and 5,000 Christians. According to an inventory carried out by the state in 1919, Ürgüp was inhabited by 12,500 Muslims, 6,000 Christian-Orthodox and 15-20 Armenian families.

Terminati gli studi di medicina a Napoli, Lanza fu designato professore nella clinica medica dell?ospedale degli incurabili e nel 1815 direttore di clinica medica nell?ospedale della pace. Deputato al Parlamento del Regno delle Due Sicilie. Dopo le insurrezioni anti borboniche del 1848, Ferdinando II di Borbone sciolse il parlamento, perseguitandone i membri liberali e dando la caccia a rivoluzionari veri e presunti. La repressione reazionaria del sovrano si abbatte' anche sul Lanza, che fu costretto ad abbandonare la citta' campana per evitare la sua cattura. Nel 1849 si stabili' a Genova dove continuo' ad esercitare la sua professione di medico. Ritornato a Napoli, mori' nel 1860.

Mancanze della pelle presso le cuffie, bel titolo chiaramente impresso tra fregi al dorso. 1) LICHTENTHAL, pp. XV, 271. Censito in 3 bibl. ital. Lichtenthal, austriaco (Pressburg 1778 - Milano 1853), medico e compositore musicale amico di Mozart e di Paganini, a Milano dal 1810, scrisse anche sulla musicoterapia. Qui riporta i medici inglesi Annesley e Jameson, ma anche metodi maomettani; e fonti ufficiali della RUSSIA (cure, fenomeni, statistiche ecc.) sulle epidemie dalla "coléra asiatica" del 1829 e 1830. 2) BROUSSAIS, pp. 96. Censito in 7 bibl. ital. (Saint-Malo 1772 - Vitry-sur-Seine 1838) fisiologo, e pensava che lo stomaco fosse "la sede delle emozioni", in collegamento con le patologie del cervello, e curava la maggior parte delle malattie come collegate alla gastroenterite. Fu influenzato dalla teoria della frenologia di Franz Joseph Gall. Nel 1832 scoppiò un'epidemia di colera che minò profondamente le sue teorie fisiologiche dato che la sua terapia a base di sanguisughe si dimostrò del tutto inutile: infatti uno dei suoi più famosi pazienti, Casimir Pierre Périer, primo ministro francese, morì sotto le sue cure. Questo insuccesso della sua teoria gli fece perdere notevolmente popolarità che riuscì a riacquisire grazie alla sua abilità retorica e alle lezioni di frenologia che tenne presso l'università di Parigi. brossura "Non si possiedono dati certi sulla popolazione esistente in Biccari nel periodo da noi preso ad esame anche se un calcolo lo si potrebbe azzardare mediante l'utilizzo dei registri dei morti e quelli delle nascite, utilizzando sia quelli della Chiesa sia quelli del Comune. Ma a nostro avviso ci inoltreremmo in un terreno paludoso. Intanto la prima avvisaglia si mostrò nell'ultimo quadrimestre del 1835 con un abnorme numero di decessi anche se l'evento non venne riportato in nessun documento ufficiale. Sembra quasi che quei decessi furono addebitati ad altre cause. Ma nel 1836 venne issata la lapide commemorativa della costruzione della Fontana e alla fine di quella descrizione leggiamo che: "... nell'anno della recuperata salute. Milleottocentotrentasei" è del tutto evidente che ci si riferisce al 1835, cioè all'ultimo quadrimestre di quell'anno e al manifestarsi, per la prima volta, della micidiale pandemia nella nostra cittadina. Questo è l'unico e "sparuto" indizio a nostra disposizione. La domanda che ci siamo posti è semplice: Perché nel 1836 si è recuperata la "salute"? Cose è mai successo nei mesi precedente o nell'anno precedente? Un qualcosa che ha attinenza con quanto succederà nell'estate del 1837? Crediamo proprio di sì!"

La teoria dell'acqua potabile e l'immunita' del colera del forte William a Calcutta. Estratto dal giornale Archiv fur Hygiene
In 16, pp. 71 + (1). Gora al margine inferiore del piatto anteriore. Br. ed. Interessante e poco comune operetta, traduzione italiana di quella apparsa sulla rivista tedesca 'Archiv fur Hygiene' che testimonia la differente teoria circa la trasmissione del colera (come di altre patologie) del chimico Pettenkorfer, docente di chimica clinica nell'universita' di Monaco, quindi d'igiene nella stessa universita'. Nel 1873 fu membro della commissione per gli studi sul colera e nel 1889 presidente dell'Accademia bavarese delle scienze. Pettenkorfer fu sempre contrario alla teoria del 'contagio', che divenne dominante nel Novecento, in base alla quale i germi sono causa diretta delle malattie. Per quanto riguarda il colera, riteneva che l'esistenza del bacillo, del vibrione del colera, non potesse da solo giustificare l'insorgere della malattia ma che si trattasse si una combinazione tra il germe e la natura. Quando il germe entrava in contatto con suoli asciutti dava origine ai fattori scatenanti dell'epidemia escludendo quindi che si trasmettesse tra individui o per ingestione di sostanze infette. In questo modo si escludeva l'acqua come veicolo primo di trasmissione della malattia. Quando l'ambiente, invece, sviluppava naturalmente delle condizioni particolari, il germe aveva la possibilita' di diventare pericoloso. Da qui discendeva che piu' che lo sviluppo di vaccini e di farmaci, bisognasse migliorare le condizioni della rete idrica e l'uomo dovesse, tramite un'alimentazione corretta e una vita equilibrata, sviluppare delle forme di resistenza proprie agli agenti esterni.

It includes individual title pages from earlier editions. Morison's Hygiest System consisted of Universal Vegetable Medical Cures; as well as various warm baths. The "British College of Health" was an institution mostly of Morison's own invention. Mrs F M Macdonald [Victorian recipes; cookery; cholera]:
Manuscript book of 'Receipts collected by Mrs. Macdonald and to which are added Useful remarks for the Mistress of a House.'
Circa 1849. 4to 36 pp and a manuscript title-page. All texts clear and complete. Disbound from a commonplace book and apparently complete. Fair on aged brittle gilt-edged paper with a few closed tears in particular to the last couple of leaves. The book is presumably in Mrs Macdonald's hand and the only indication to her identity is the final note see below signed 'F. M. M.' which shows her to have been an educated member of the middle classes. Divided into three parts. The first part is 'Useful Remarks for the Mistress of a House' 25 pp paginated from 1 to 23. The first page carrying remarks on Tea Loaf Sugar Moist Sugar Eggs and Spices with the last two annotated 'Experientia docet!' The first entry reads: 'Tea should be kept in a dry place and any store should be in Tin Canisters wrapt in flannel. Two spoonful is the quantity given to work-women for breakfast or Tea.' Extensive sections on Pickles and Preserves. Also Raspberry Vinegar Candles Soap 'Lay in also an annual stock' and Coals the latter annotated 'Since the above was written Coals are sold by the Ton'. Long sections on 'Poultry yard' 'Pidgeons' 'Rabbits' 'If the Doe is weak during her accouchement give her beer caudle or warm fresh grains' 'Ornamental Supper dishes' 'Flummery' including 'Green Melon in Flummery' The second part comprising 6 pp of French recipes: 'Soupe a la Bonne-Femme' 'Roux Blanc white Thickening' 'Roux brun brown thickening' 'Sauce Tournee' Sauce a l'Allemande German sauce' 'Sauce au Maitre d'Hotel' 'Sauce du Maitre d'Hotel au maigre' 'To boil Artichokes the French way' 'French melted butter only good with Artichokes in my opinion'. The third part 6 pp containing miscellaneous recipes beginning with a long 'Anti-Cholera diet' and ending with 'Lord Ponsonby's Cure for Cholera. 1849.' 'It is asserted by Lord Ponsonby's Agent that the patient is immediately cured before a Medical Man arrives.' This is dated 'June 24: 1849' and is followed by a note signed 'F. M. M.' reading 'The above receipt was given to me by a Man of the name of Poole a Poulterer at Alston near Cheltenham who saw it tried in his House by his Brother in Law who was seized with all the symptoms of Cholera and had the Medicine made up to be ready at a moment and was quite well and able to return to his home some miles distant perfectly recovered the next Morning.'
