Garrison-Morton 404; 1315. Bichat was the founder of pathological anatomy creating a theory of disease based on tissues rather than organs. "Bichat's five-volume Anatomie descriptive 1801-3 and his work on general anatomy applied to physiology and medicine 1802 opened out an entirely new field for anatomists that of a detailed description of the parts and tissues of the body in health and disease. . . . Bichat was a forerunner of Henle and the histologists dividing the tissues into 21 non-microscopic varieties which he treated as indivisible parts like the elements in chemistry each tissue having its own particular kind of sensibility and contractibility" Garrison Hist. Med. pp. 444-45. The Anatomie descriptive was Bichat's last exposition of his pathological system; he died in 1802 at the age of 31 having completed only the first three volumes. The remaining volumes were completed by Francois Buisson and Philibert-Joseph Roux. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 537. The foundation of histology and tissue pathology. Bichat's most important contribution to anatomy was his generalization of Pinel's theory expressed in Nosographie philosophique 1798 that pathology must be based upon the structure of the tissues of which bodily organs are composed regardless of where in the body they occur. Bichat distinguished twenty-one different types of tissue which he classified according to texture and to properties: extensibility contractility and the vital properties-- organic contractility and sensibility "insensible" or "subliminal" on the one hand and animal contractility and sensibility "sensible" or "conscious" on the other. Each tissue differed in its diseases as diseases were nothing more than alterations in the tissue's vital properties. Claude Bernard said of Bichat that he "decentralized life and incarnated it in the tissues" quoted in Hall II p. 129 and that his ideas were the source of modern opinions concerning vital phenomena. L'auteur Marie François Xavier Bichat médecin et anatomo-pathologiste français était l'eléve de Desault linitiateur et le fondateur de lécole chirurgicale du xixe siècle. Desault a peu écrit mais il a exercé par la valeur de son enseignement clinique un ascendant considérable sur ses nombreux élèves. Également remarquable comme opérateur que comme professeur il a fait faire un grand pas à lanatomie chirurgicale. La chirurgie lui doit un grand nombre dinventions ou de perfectionnements importants parmi lesquels on remarque ses appareils pour les fractures en particulier de la clavicule et pour les maladies des voies urinaires dans lesquelles il fut le premier à utiliser les sondes en gomme. Bichat studied anatomy and surgery under Marc-Antoine Petit chief surgeon at the Hôtel Dieu in Lyon. In 1793 he became a pupil then assistant of Pierre-Joseph Desault surgeon and anatomist in Paris. After his teachers death in 1795 Bichat completed the fourth volume of Desaults Journal de chirurgie adding a biographical memoir of its author. In addition to his observations at the bedsides of patients at the Hôtel Dieu Bichat studied the postmortem changes induced in various organs by disease. Without knowledge of the cell as the functional unit of living things he was among the first to visualize the organs of the body as being formed through the differentiation of simple functional units or tissues. This view he developed in Traité des membranes 1800; Treatise on Membranes.
