Old pencilled names on front free endpaper and title page. �The measure then of life in general is the difference which exists between the effort of exterior power and that of interior resistance. The excess of the former is an indication of its weakness; the predominance of the latter is an index of its force.� Bichat used this measure to establish the difference between animal and organic life and to discuss the influence of the �death of the heart� over that of the brain and the influence of the �death of the brain� over all of the other organs. Bichat�s work caused controversy by his assurtions relating to the definition of life and death.
