The excess of the former is an indication of its weakness; the predominance of the latter is an index of its force.� Bichat used this measure to establish the difference between animal and organic life and to discuss the influence of the �death of the heart� over that of the brain and the influence of the �death of the brain� over all of the other organs. Bichat�s work caused controversy by his assurtions relating to the definition of life and death.
