In 8° (17,8x11,2 cm); 367, (3) pp. Bella legatura fine settecento-primissimi dell'ottocento in piena pergamena rigida con titolo impresso in oro al dorso su fascetta. Tagli marmorizzati. Sempre in oro al dorso sono presenti fregi ornamentali. Frego xilografico al frontespizio. Testatine, finalini e iniziali xilografici. Qualche piccola e leggerissima macchiolina di foxing dovuta alla qualità della carta e nel complesso, buono-ottimo esemplare. Bell'edizione veneziana non comune (5 soli esemplari censiti in ICCU) di questa classica opera del grande medico e poeta svizzero, nato a Berna nel 1708, Albrecht von Haller. Fra i temi trattati in quest'opera: Arteria Venae; Cor; Sanguinis; Nutirtio; Respiratio; Cerebrum; Motus Musculorum; Tactus; Gustus; Olfactus; Maducatio Saliva; Pancreas; Renes; Uterus Virgineus; Uterus Fecundus; Vescica Urina; ecc. L'autore studiò medicina a Tubingia e dal 1725 a Leida laureandosi nel 1727. Nel 1728 insieme con Johannes Gessner, viaggia attraverso i paesi alpini, acquisendo un'esperienza importante tanto per i suoi interessi botanici che letterari. L'anno dopo, a Basilea, segue i corsi di matematica tenuti da Johann Bernoulli; medico a Berna dal 1729, nel 1735 istituì un theatrum anatomicum per il perfezionamento professionale dei medici. Dal 1736 al 1753 insegnò anatomia, botanica e chirurgia a Gottinga, fondandovi l'istituto di anatomia, il giardino botanico e, nel 1751, la Reale Società delle scienze di cui fu presidente. Nelle Icones anatomicae descrisse per primo (1743 - 1756) la circolazione arteriosa nel corpo umano e pubblicò i suoi Primi lineamenti di fisiologia nel 1747; studiò le proprietà del sistema nervoso e muscolare nel De partibus corporis humani sensilibus et irritabilibus, del 1752, respingendo le interpretazioni materialistiche di Julien Offray de La Mettrie; studiò anche lo sviluppo degli embrioni; nel 1766 pubblicò gli Elementa physiologiae corporis humani. Haller è considerato uno dei più grandi medici del suo tempo. Good copy.

8vo (210 x 130mm), viii, 76 pp., half-title, interleaved throughout with blank paper, contemporary Ms. notes in ink and pencil on 9 blank leaves at the beginning, contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, upper hinge detached. Sir Busick Harwood was Professor of Anatomy in the University of Cambridge from 1785 to 1814 and simultaneously Downing Professor of Medicine from 1800 to 1814. "He demonstrated the transfusion of blood from sheep to blood-depleted dogs under differing experimental conditions. Student annotated copies of the synopsis record relevant comments from all fields of medicine and indicate that Harwood possessed an extensive knowledge of contemporary medical research. Having failed to get attendance at lectures and dissections made compulsory, Harwood gave up public dissections because nobody came to them." (ODNB). Russell, British Anatomy, 391.
