Stephen MacKenzie (1844-1909) studied at London Hospital, then at the Aberdeen University, where he received his doctorate in 1875. Following further education in Berlin he once more came to London Hospital as a physician, and in 1877 became lecturer in pathology and pathological anatomy, in 1880 lecturer in theoretical and clinical medicine. He was at the same time physician at the Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was knighted in 1909. Formerly in the library of the Birmingham Medical Institute with a couple of their neat library stamps.

Conservati i fogli di guardia originali. Antica nota di possesso di “Antonio Laghi” al frontespizio che definisce questo esemplare esser appartenuto con tutta probabilità al celebre architetto bolognese, Antonio Maria Laghi (1676-1756). Non comune prima edizione di questa importante opera del celebre medico, anatomista e fisiologo originario di Crevalcore (Bologna), Marcello Malpighi. Quest’opera vide le stampe postuma solo grazie all’opera del medico veronese Girolamo Gaspari e all’interessamento di Antonio Vallisnieri. L’opera è particolarmente interessante per l’ampio spazio dedicato a riflessioni psichiatriche dedicate a varie malattie mentali. Opera non comune, in prima edizione in barbe, dalla provenienza celebre ed in ottime condizioni di conservazione. Cfr. "Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694), fu uno dei pi geniali anatomici che la storia ricordi, scopriva nel 1661 lesistenza dei vasi capillari sostituendo questi nella spiegazione del sistema circolatorio alle anastomosi che Harvey aveva immaginato (Castiglioni, p. 522).. Malpighi il fondatore dell'anatomia dei tessuti: egli il primo fisiologo che si serve del microscopio nei suoi esami e quindi al suo genio veramente straordinario, alla sua passione di ricerca si apre uno smisurato campo dazione.. Fu il Malpighi a descrivere esattamente la cellula come fondamento di ogni organo vivente e ad intravedere per il primo che questa legge vale per tutti gli organi viventi. Fu veramente il principe degli anatomici italiani, e uno fra i pi grandi medici di tutti i tempi. (Castiglioni, pp. 525-526). Cfr. In -8°, pp. 12, cartonato moderno. Paolo Manfredi (1640-1716), lucchese di nascita, visse a Roma dove studiò al Collegio Romano e poi alla Sapienza, dove si sarebbe dedicato alla medicina. Dopo aver studiato per qualche anno le trasfusioni da uomo a uomo e da animale a uomo, ottenne un posto di lettore ordinario di anatomia e chirurgia nel 1668, poco prima della redazione di questo racconto di una dissezione, volume che, nel suo stile, accorda “un approccio strettamente dimostrativo con uno più tradizionalmente retorico-filosofico” (DBI, sub vocem) Paolo Manfredi (1640-1716), born in Lucca, lived in Rome where he was a student at the Collegio Romano and then at La Sapienza University, where he devoted himself to medicine. After having studied some years the blood transfusion (even the animal-to-man one), he obtained a chair as a teacher in anatomy and surgery in 1668, before drafting this dissection tale, a volume that, in Manfredi’s style, is written halfway between demonstration and philosophy (see Dbi, sub vocem)

28×20,7 cm; 18 pp. e 4 c. di tav. fuori testo. Legatura editoriale con titolo impresso in nero e rosso al piatto anteriore e dorso in tela rossa. 4 bellissime tavole a colori con i componenti di naso, bocca, orecchio, occhio composti da figure sovrapponibili in stile decupage. Il testo è opera del noto medico veronese Orsino Manganotti che si laureò con una tesi inerente “Il metodo abortivo nella cura delle malattie veneree” e fu traduttore di numerose pubblicazioni mediche. Piccolo strappetto, ininfluente, senza perdita di carta nel margine basso bianco, leggerissime e non fastidiose macchioline di foxing nella parte bianca delle tavole e per il resto in buono-ottimo stato di conservazione. Prima edizione stampata della stamperia veneta dei fratelli Drucker di questa pubblicazione italiana che riprende la moda ottocentesca tedesca delle figure scomponibili. Le edizioni italiane ottocentesche scomponibili sono assai rare. Nessun esemplare censito in ICCU. RARO.
