Baillière, 1840. 3 volumes grands in-8 de [4]-CCCLI-459-[2] / [6]-811-[2] et [6]-XXXII-878-[2] pages, demi-chagrin rouge à coins, dos à 4 nerfs ornés de roulettes, filets, encadrements, tomaison et titre dorés, filets dorés sur les plats, toutes tranches dorées. Bords et coins frottés, quelques minuscules taches et épidermures à la reliure, une croix et un numéro de classement au crayon rouge sur un feuillet muet au début des 3 volumes. Mises à part quelques très rares rousseurs, l'intérieur est remarquablement frais. Probablement jamais lu, la dorure tient encore les pages entre elles...‎

‎Illustré de 217 figures in-texte; sans le portrait au frontispice annoncé, qui n'a probablement jamais été monté dans cet exemplaire. Edition recherchée. Elle est considérée comme la meilleure édition des oeuvres d'Ambroise Paré. L'introduction de Malgaigne (cf. Garrison & Morton, 5790) représente une magnifique synthèse de l'histoire de la chirurgie en Occident jusqu'à Ambroise Paré et contient une foule de renseignements précieux. Cette introduction "renferme les plus belles pages que l'on ait écrites sur l'histoire de la chirurgie. Il est impossible de lire sans une profonde admiration cette synthèse écrite dans une langue parfaite." Avec deux inscriptions en début du volume I: une dédicace de Pictet de Sergy datée 1880 au professeur Jacques Reverdin, une autre du proffesseur à son fils, datée de 1926. De la bibliothèque du Professeur Jacques Reverdin (1842-1929) illustre médecin genevois qui fut chirurgien en chef de l'ambulance suisse durant le siège de Paris en 1870-1871. Adjoint et suppléant de Louis Odier à l'hôpital cantonal (1874-1877), il y fut ensuite chirurgien en chef (1878-1882). Professeur de pathologie externe et de médecine opératoire dès la création de la faculté de médecine de l'université de Genève (1876-1910), il fonda avec son cousin Auguste la première clinique chirurgicale privée à Genève. Il découvrit à Paris la greffe épidermique (1869), inventa et mit au point l'aiguille à suture dite "de Reverdin" (1879), décrivit le "myxœdème opératoire" (affection de la thyroïde, 1882), dont la paternité fut le sujet d'une controverse avec Theodor Kocher. Atteint de surdité en 1910, il cessa ses activités médicales et démissionna de sa chaire de professeur. Il s'adonna à l'étude des papillons; ses travaux lui valurent également une notoriété internationale. Il fut le cofondateur de l'Association des médecins du canton de Genève. (Roger Mayer in DHS).‎

Title page and several other pages repaired. There is some spotting and staining in text but general appearance is very good particularly seen in the strong impression for the woodcuts. Provenance: Ex Libris Jean-Jacob de Gruytere médicin à Menin et de Henri-Marcel Van Mocksic date du 17 Février 1755 and Ex Libris Dr. Leboucq. This is another page-for-page reprint of the text of the 1604 edition. The publisher is the same as that of the 1615 edition his device appearing on both title-pages Doe p. 197. Doe also points out that the Dutch editions were fare superior to the “very inferior” Latin edition. In addition the Dutch editions used the same woodblocks used for the French editions minus “a few historical woodcuts which the printer left out by Â…the translatorÂ’s advice because they were not instructive and would have encumbered the book…” Doe pp.193- 194. <br/><br/>This is another page-for-page reprint of the text of the 1604 edition.
