Il cinquantenario della rivoluzione del DNA ha coinciso con la pubblicazione della prima bozza della sequenza del genoma umano, e ciò ha offerto a Watson l’occasione per una illuminante e insieme spregiudicata lettura della sua storia e dei suoi problemi. Da molecola esoterica qual era, attraente solo per pochi specialisti, il DNA ha finito per diventare il cuore stesso di una tecnologia che sta trasformando la vita di tutti noi, sollevando ardue questioni di ordine pratico, sociale ed etico: si pensi alla terapia genica e alla diagnosi prenatale, agli organismi geneticamente modificati in agricoltura e all’impronta genetica per la prevenzione della criminalità. In questa ampia sintesi Watson non si limita a una illustrazione tecnica, ma prende vigorosamente posizione sui temi più scottanti oggi sul tappeto, sottolineando la necessità di sgomberare il campo da numerose pregiudiziali ideologiche.
