br. Nel dibattito pubblico italiano l'apparato simbolico del discorso ostile alla genetica e alla biomedicina contemporanee si fonda sull'impiego polemico di accezioni fortemente negative della parola "eugenetica". Si tratti di diagnosi prenatale, fecondazione assistita o terapia genica, è sempre questa parola-tabù a comparire. E ad accompagnarla è, il più delle volte, il riferimento a uno specifico contesto storico: il nazismo. In tale discorso stigmatizzante l'eugenetica viene presentata come una forma di "pseudoscienza reazionaria, razzista e antisemita", fonte di violenza e discriminazioni. Ma spesso una reale definizione è del tutto assente. In forte contrasto con tale banalizzazione, negli ultimi trent'anni la storiografia ha definito un quadro sempre più complesso dell'eugenetica nel Novecento. Alla luce di questi sviluppi il libro ragiona sull'uso pubblico del concetto di "eugenetica", per decostruire le ambiguità semantiche, spesso strumentali, legate all'adozione del termine nel dibattito politico-culturale italiano.

"Un'analisi esauriente dei dati di genetica umana raccolti negli ultimi cinquant'anni e dei nuovi dati ottenuti con tecniche messe a punto di recente ha permesso ai miei colleghi e a me di cartografare la distribuzione di centinaia di geni su scala mondiale. Da questa mappa abbiamo potuto dedurre le linee filogenetiche delle popolazioni del mondo. Il nostro albero genealogico concorda con un altro albero che comprende un numero minore di popolazioni, costruito a partire da dati genetici fondamentalmente diversi.
