Finora gli ogm sono stati chiaramente riconoscibili, ma con l'avvento dell'editing genomico sarà impossibile distinguere una modifica ottenuta in laboratorio da una mutazione casuale. Tecniche come crispr-Cas9 possono modificare un singolo gene, senza importarlo da un altro organismo, così come un word processor può modificare una parola di un testo, senza fare «copia e incolla» da un altro documento. Queste innovazioni promettono di rivoluzionare l'agricoltura e quello che mangiamo, con piante che resistono alla siccità e possono fare a meno di fertilizzanti e pesticidi.
