C'è chi è stato capace di fecondare un uovo di rana con una cellula somatica, ottenendo una rana perfetta. Ma la ricerca è andata ancora oltre: si è riusciti a togliere a un ovulo il suo nucleo e a introdurvi quello di una cellula somatica in fase di avanzata divisione, impiantando poi l'embrione in un utero. Questa operazione è stata eseguita sull'uomo? E ciò che afferma David Rorvik in questo volume, con l'abilità consumata del reporter. Nel laboratorio del dottor Darwin è nato il clone, l'uomo nuovo creato, per così dire, per riproduzione asessuata, l'uomo che non è figlio più che fratello gemello (identico, salva la differenza di età) di suo padre e che non ha alcun rapporto di affinità con la madre, la quale è stata per lui solo un ambiente e un mezzo di coltura. Un fatto sconvolgente e inquietante che dischiude la prospettiva di un mondo abitato da individui perfettamente identici e in cui tornano ad affacciarsi agghiaccianti progetti di eugenetica. David Rorvik, giornalista, è autore di alcuni libri divulgativi in campo scientifico. Nota dell'editore americano Nel 1977 David Rorvik venne negli uffici della divisione commerciale della J.B. Spiegò però che si era impegnato a non rivelare a nessuno l'identità delle altre persone che avevano avuto parte nella vicenda. Questa circostanza ci toglieva la possibilità di una verifica e ci impediva quindi di avallare il suo racconto dinanzi al pubblico. Discutemmo allora se accettare o no il libro di cui ci offriva il progetto a queste condizioni. Rorvik è un autore esperto nel campo della biologia umana e ha ricevuto premi e riconoscimenti per i suoi scritti nel campo dell'informazione scientifica. Il libro che ci proponeva di fare avrebbe suscitato inevitabilmente grandi controversie, ma avrebbe affrontato problemi scientifici, sociali, morali e religiosi di grande portata. questi problemi in un modo rivelatore e responsabile, e decidemmo di accettare la sua proposta. Eravamo convinti che Rorvik avrebbe trattato Il racconto che segue è sorprendente. L'autore ci assicura che è vero. Noi non sappiamo se sia cosi. Siamo però pienamente convinti che il libro da lui scritto stimolerà l'interesse e la discussione su problemi che hanno un'importanza estrema per il nostro immediato futuro. L'impresa non è così facile come poteva sembrare nel film di Spielberg. In effetti, DeSalle e Lindley invitano a imbarcarsi in un viaggio ai confini dell'ingegneria genetica. Small nicks to margins of titlepage. <br/><br/><em>First appearance of a milestone paper in genetics being the "REDISCOVERY" OF MENDEL'S LAWS OF HEREDITY" - This paper together with the two other papers from the same year by Carl Correns and Erich Tschermak laid the foundations of a new scientific discipline that in 1906 was given the name "genetics" and less than a century later rose to become the leading science in Western society. This French announcement was published 4 days before his longer paper "Das Spaltungsgesetzt der Hybride" in which Mendel is mentioned.De Vries completed most of his hybridization experiments without knowing about Mendel's work. Based on his own results de Vries drew the same conclusions as Mendel. De Vries published his work in 1900 first in French then in German. In the French report there was no mention of Mendel but this was amended by de Vries in the German paper. It is possible that de Vries read Mendel's paper before he published his own and included Mendel's name in the later printing when he realized that other people also knew about Mendel's work. De Vries may have thought that his own conclusions were superior to Mendel's. "During the 1880s de Vries became interested in heredity. In 1889 he published Intracellular Pangenesis in which he critically reviewed previous research on inheritance and advanced the theory that elements in the nucleus ‘pangenes’ determine hereditary traits. To investigate his theories he began breeding plants in 1892 and by 1896 had obtained clear evidence for the segregation of characters in the offspring of crosses in 3:1 ratios. He delayed publishing these results proposing to include them in a larger book but in 1900 he came across the work of Gregor Mendel published 34 years earlier and announced his own findings. This stimulated both Karl Correns and Erich von Tschermak-Seysenegg to publish their essentially similar observations."
