London was the world s largest and richest city, the center of hectic social ferment and spectacular sexual liberation. These singular conditions prompted revolutionary modes of thought, novel sensibilities, and constant debate about the relations between men and women. ‎Théophile GAUTIER a adressé à la Présidente,de Rome,une longue lettre bouffonne et obscène commentant ace que son ami et lui avaient appris en matière de sexualité au cours de leur voyage en Italie.Communiquée aussitôt à son cercle. La missive fit le tour de Paris. Elle circulait sous forme de copies manuscrites dans la bonne société, avant la disparition de la Présidente. Appollonie SABATIER (pour l’état civil Aglaé-Joséphien SAVATIER née en 1822) Son air triomphant mettait autour d’elle comme la de la lumière et du bonheur."Elle se montrait supérieure aux autre femmes, d’abord parce qu’’elle était mieux faite que la plupart d’entre elles, ensuite parce que, contrairement aux habitudes des personnes de son sexe, elle n’exigeait point qu’on lui fit la cour, et permettait aux hommes de parler devant elle des choses les plus sérieuses et les plus abstraites" La première lettre à la Présidente ne fut imprimée (à petit nombre) qu’en 1890‎

‎Sehr seltene Variante mit den 19 explizit erotische Original-Radierungen von Otto Schoff, klandestiner Druck des Gurlitt Verlags. Dieses Werk erschien zunächst offiziell in der 4. Reihe "Neue Bilderbücher" des Gurlitt Verlags mit 19 'harmlosen' Radierungen von Paul Scheurich. Bei der vorliegenden Ausgabe wurden Text und Ausstattung übernommen, jedoch mit den erotischen Radierungen von Otto Schoff versehen, hier unter dem Pseudonym 'Maler Scheibenberger' und ohne Verlagsangaben / Impressum erschienen. Eine Auflagenhöhe ist nicht bekannt, doch es können nur wenige Exemplare sein. Gedruckt ist das Werk auf Bütten. Einbandkanten etwas beschabt. Im Schnitt gering stockfleckig, insgesamt gutes Exemplar dieses raren Drucks mit den reizvollen (hier wortwörtlich zu nehmen) Radierungen von Schoff. In modern red cloth box with gilt stamped title. Very rare variant with the 19 explicitly erotic original etchings by Otto Schoff, clandestine printing by Gurlitt Verlag. This work was first officially published in Gurlitt Verlag's 4th series ?Neue Bilderbücher? with 19 ?harmless? etchings by Paul Scheurich. In the present edition, the text and design were adopted, but with the erotic etchings by Otto Schoff, published here under the pseudonym ?Maler Scheibenberger? and without publisher's details / imprint. The number of copies is not known, but it can only be a few. The work is printed on laid paper. Edges of binding somewhat scuffed. Slight foxing to the edges, overall a good copy of this rare print with the charming (to be taken literally here) etchings by Schoff. Variante très rare avec les 19 gravures originales explicitement érotiques d'Otto Schoff, impression clandestine des éditions Gurlitt. Cette ?uvre a d'abord été publiée officiellement dans la 4e série « Neue Bilderbücher » des éditions Gurlitt avec 19 gravures 'inoffensives' de Paul Scheurich. Pour la présente édition, le texte et le décor ont été repris, mais les gravures érotiques d'Otto Schoff y ont été ajoutées, ici sous le pseudonyme 'Maler Scheibenberger' et sans indication d'éditeur / d'impressum. Le tirage n'est pas connu, mais il ne peut s'agir que de quelques exemplaires. L'ouvrage est imprimé sur vergé. Bords de la reliure légèrement éraflés. Petites taches sur les coupes, bon exemplaire de cette rare impression avec les charmantes gravures de Schoff (à prendre ici au pied de la lettre). Bibliographie uniquement chez Englisch, Irrgarten, p. 266.‎

‎Vollkommen klandestine Ausgabe dieses erotischen 'Briefes an die Päsidentin', der in das Gesamtwerk des Autors nicht aufgenommen wurde. Immerhin geben die 'Editeurs' an, diese Ausgabe sorgfältig nach der Originalausgabe kollationiert zu haben, frei von Fehlern und komplett. Als einziger Schmuck finden sich verstreut kleine Herzchen. Die schlichte Machart läßt eine lediglich private Zirkulation vermuten. Das Impressum nennt eine Auflage von 349; hier vorliegend eins von 35 numerierten Exemplaren auf getöntem Vergé de Hollande. Deckel verziert mit einer wohl privat montierten erotischen Vignette aus den 'Dames romaines'. Leicht berieben. Vereinzelt ein kleiner Braunfleck, leicht gebräunt am Rand und in der Falz. Vgl. Die Heliogravüre als Frontispiz zeigt Gautier nach einer Zeichnung von Benjamin Roubaud. Broschur angestaubt und am oberen Rand mit 3 kl. Einrissen. Frontispiz am Rand leicht stockfleckig. Innen vereinzelt leicht fingerfleckiges, sonst ordentliches, teils noch unaufgeschnittenes und unbeschnittenes Exemplar. Perceau 95-5; Dutel 457; vgl. L'héliogravure comme frontispice montre Gautier d'après un dessin par Benjamin Roubaud. Reliure poussiéreuse, marge supérieure avec trois petites déchirures. Qqs. taches des doigts à l'intérieur.
