George vive con il suo maiale domestico Fred e due genitori ecoguerrieri che vorrebbero fare del figlio un coltivatore biologico, anche se a lui, più che a terra, piace guardare in cielo per contare le stelle. Un giorno, grazie a una visita non autorizzata di Fred nel giardino accanto, il ragazzo conosce i suoi nuovi vicini: la fantasiosa Annie, il suo papà scienziato Eric, e anche Cosmo, il computer parlante più potente del mondo. Cosmo è in grado di aprire, al centro del soggiorno, una finestra sulla vasta oscurità dello spazio, attraverso la quale i ragazzi scopriranno le meraviglie dell'Universo, come nasce e muore una stella, o come si formano i pianeti. Molto noti e significativi sono anche i suoi studi sull'unificazione della gravitazione con la meccanica quantistica. La sua opera più nota è forse il saggio A brief history of time (Dal big bang ai buchi neri, 1988). È stato professore di matematica e fisica teorica presso l'università di Cambridge, e membro di numerose istituzioni scientifiche. Nel corso della sua carriera ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti. Lucy Hawking è una giornalista e scrittrice inglese. Figlia dello scienziato Stephen Hawking, vive a Londra. Dal 2007 in avanti ha cominciato a scrivere una serie di racconti per ragazzi ambientati nello spazio, tradotti in 38 lingue e pubblicati in 43 paesi.
