Abraham Merritt was primarily a journalist and first an assistant editor then the editor of The American Weekly. His fictional output was small but powerful inspired by H. Rider Haggard and Robert W. Chambers and in turn he was an inspiration to H. P. Lovecraft and many others. His first fantasy story Through the Dragon Glass was published in 1917 in All-Story Weekly. Dwellers in the Mirage perhaps Merritt's best known work was published in Argosy starting in January 1932 the story of an American Langdon who discovers a warm valley in Alaska. Two races inhabit the valley the Little People and a branch of an ancient Mongolian race; they worship the evil Kraken named Khalk'ru which they summon from another dimension to offer human sacrifice. The archaeologist hero Kenton receives a mysterious ancient Babylonian artifact which he discovers contains an incredibly detailed model of a ship. This edition uses the text from the original six part Argosy serialization from 1924. Bound in dark orange cloth with gold spine le ttering. A VG copy in a VG- dust jacket. The book's spine has two tin y drops of white paint and light rubbinh to the gold lettering. Tiny b umps to the lower corners. Mild tanning to the endpapers. The dust jac ket is frayed/chipped along the head and base of the spine and at its corners. The front panel has a small chip to its lower right corner an d some chips/creases at its upper edge.
