TARZAN THE TERRIBLE - A Tarzan of the Apes Adventure
New York: Grosset and Dunlap 1923. 408 pp. Red decorated cloth lettered in black on the front panel and spine. Frontis and three interior plates by J. Allen St. John facing pages: 106; 170; and 234. Map of Pal-ul-don and Glossary in the back. No Burroughs books listed on the rear panel instead there are eight Zane Grey titles. According to Zeuschner this fits all the points in the first Grosset and Dunlap printing except for the artist who did the dustjacket - this is clearly not by J. Allen St. John - more likely it is C. Edmund Monroe. Light wear at the head and foot of the spine and on the corners of the dustjacket; price clipped; previous owner's name twice on the front free endpaper; light shelfwear on the book. TARZAN THE TERRIBLE - Tarzan of the Apes Book 8 Eight
New York: Grosset and Dunlap 1958. 305 pp. Green tweed boards decorated in dark green on the front panel and spine; green upper edge. Dj art by C. Edmund Monroe. No Burroughs books listed on the rear panel instead there are nine Zane Grey titles. Edge and corner wear on the dustjacket with some tape repairs around the edges and a tape mark on the front pastedown; faint tape ghosts on the upper and lower corners of the front free endpaper. Few fictional characters hold as firm a place in our culture as Tarzan. His well-received debut in a magazine story in 1912 led to a book-length appearance in Tarzan of the Apes and its sequel The Return of Tarzan. The two books make up a single extended narrative taking Tarzan from his earliest days as an orphaned child in the jungles of West Africa. The first Tarzan movie was in 1918 directed by Scott Sidney and starring Elmo Lincoln Enid Markey True Boardman Kathleen Kirkham and others. Recently filmed was The Legend of Tarzan directed by David Yates in 2016 and starring Alexander Skarsgard Margot Robbie Samuel L. Jackson Christoph Waltz and a host of others. In between there were scores of films radio shows television episodes comic books games et cetera. And since that first appearance in print there have been twenty-four official Tarzan titles with almost uncountable editions and also fresh titles added to the series by a number of different authors. . Later Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good Only. Illus. by C. Edmund Monroe;. 12mo. Grosset and Dunlap Hardcover
