Delany Samuel R.
The Jewels of Aptor P/B
Sphere 1971. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket. 4.25" x 7. P/B 159 pages condition is good an owners name to the flyleaf. This is Delany's first book written when he was nineteen but only now published in its complete version. It would be a brilliant achievement for any writer of any age: as the first work of a very young man it is stunning vigorous and imaginative with a story that is thrilling purely on the level of adventure and yet has a deeper significance which makes the reading of it an enriching experience. It tells of the odyssey of three men and a boy Ursen the sailor who is built like a giant; Geo the poet; limmi the Negro; and Snake the twelve-year-old thief with four arms who is dumb for his tongue has been torn out but who can mind-read and transmit his own thoughts into the minds of other people. The time is a post-atomic era and the action takes place on two islands Leptar the domain of the White Goddess Argo and Aptor ruled over by the Dark God Hama. There are three jewels which bestow immense power for good or evil on those who know how to use them. Two of them are in the possession of Leptar and the third of Aptor; and the story concerns the efforts of the goddess Argo who has many incarnations to recover the remaining jewel from Aptor. For this task she enlists the services of Ursen Geo and Snake Iimmi they do not meet until later when after a terrible voyage they are cast up on the sinister shores of Aptor. Here they encounter bat-like creatures which can instantly tear a man apart and shambling animals which feed on the flesh of the dead. They traverse great forests and enter a desolate ruined city a relic of the atomic age where they are pursued by a jelly-like engulfing substance and in escaping expose themselves to even greater dangers. And always side by side with physical peril there is mental confusion and questions that they cannot answer. Is Snake a spy for Hama If not who is the traitor in their midst-for traitor there certainly is And which is light and which dark which good and which evil-Argo or Hama In the beginning they believe they know but by the time their mission is at an end and they have met Hama face to face they are filled with doubt. Perhaps the only thing they have learnt is that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Sphere paperback

Dell'Armi Ivano
