In The Presence Of Mine Enemies

Tight spine clean pages. NO writing marks or tears inside book. 426 pages. Dust cover shows light wear - no tears. Harry Turtledove the master of the alternate history asks a fascinating question in this novel: What if Nazi Germany won World War II and ruled over most of Europe and North America well into the 21st century Heinrich Gimpel is a mid-level government worker living in Berlin with his wife Lise and their three children. Life is good for Heinrich and his family who are living in the capital of a world-spanning Third Reich the heart of the Nazi regime. And life will remain good so long as no one discovers that they're Jews. Thus far Heinrich and his wife have been model citizens and have stayed out of trouble; but as the political landscape of the Third Reich dramatically changes when a new Fhrer comes to power their safety is put in jeopardy. As revolutionary reforms begin polarizing the populace Heinrich tries to fend off the advances of his best friend's wife with disastrous results. Although In the Presence of Mine Enemies is decidedly more cerebral than Turtledove's popular alternate history Great War and Worldwar sagas it is by no means lacking in excitement. The last few chapters of this novel are as action-packed and emotionally charged as any in recent memory. With dozens of major characters set against an incredibly well researched historical background In the Presence of Mine Enemies is another Turtledove classic. Paul Goat Allen. Synopsis: Conan is back and at the top of his form! SFWA Grand Master L. Sprague de Camp was revered in the genre of fantasy for both his fiction and nonfiction. Booklist praised his novel The Honorable Barbarian saying: The action is brisk and the worlds and characters are described with de Camp's deft light touch . . . thoroughly agreeable entertainment while Kirkus Reviews said of The Pixilated Peeress the unassuming style and verve of the telling keep the pages turning. Pure prose junk-food. But more important L. Sprague de Camp wrote Dark Valley Destiny the definitive biography of Conan's creator Robert E. Howard leaving little wonder as to why Conan and the Spider God is considered one of the finest novels in the canon of Conan. Son of a blacksmith a former slave and thief Conan the Cimmerian has risen to the rank of Captain of the Royal Guard. But as usual trouble is his bedfellow. Forced to kill while defending himself Conan must flee the vengeance of the High Priest of Erlik. Foraging through field and forest meeting friend and foe Conan cuts a bloody swath through assassins and bounty hunters all the way to the sinister temple of Zath where he encounters the huge and hideous Spider God. Facing certain death Conan becomes both the hunter . . . and the hunted. Conan and the Spider God is a thrilling adventure of the mighty barbarian from one of the genre's most revered authors. Publishers Weekly: The beloved barbarian returns in a reprint of the late L. Sprague de Camp's Conan and the Spider God a "Conan pastiche" originally published in 1980 offering more dramatic adventures of Robert E. Howard's blue-eyed broad-shouldered sword-wielding hero. When Conan is accused of abducting a queen he follows her kidnappers to the temple of Zath the spider-god of Yezud where an epic battle ensues. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information. Biography: L. Sprague de Camp winner of the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement was fluent in several languages and traveled the world. Between the Rivers
New York New York U.S.A.: TOR Books 1998. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Near-new condition. Stated First Edition. Number line: 0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Tight spine clean pages. 381 pages. NO writing marks or tears inside book. Synopsis: At the sun-drenched dawn of human history in the great plain between the two great rivers are the cities of men. And each city is ruled by its god. But the god of the city of Gibil is lazy and has let the men of his city develop the habit of thinking for themselves. Now the men of Gibil have begun to devise arithmetic and commerce and are sending expeditions to trade with other lands. They're starting to think that perhaps men needn't always be subject to the whims of gods. This has the other god worried. And well they might be.because human cleverness once awakened isn't likely to be easily squelched. VOYA: Sharar son of the merchant Ereshguna is entrusted with a trading expedition to Alashkurru. Expeditions in the past have proven extremely successful because Sharar's people are the best smiths around and make the best weapons. This expedition is extremely important for Sharar for success means he will be able to raise the bride price necessary to marry his beloved. The expedition meets with little success however. The gods of this world are angry at Engibil the god of Sharar's people. The gods sense that Engibil's people are slipping out of the old ways. They no longer truly respect and worship the ancient gods: what they are enamored of is technological change and innovation. The gods fear that contact with Sharar's people and the trade goods they make will corrupt their own peoples so trade with Sharar's people is forbidden. Sharar must figure out how to deal with the outraged deities of his world if he is to preserve both the livelihood of his people and his marriage prospects. Turtledove has created another winning fantasy world Thessalonica Baen 1997 is also a great read where some men really can hear the gods speak. Sharar himself is haunted by his grandfather's ghost every bit as cantankerous in death as he was in life. But the ghosts and gods are able to remain in this world only so long as the people believe in and venerate them and Sharar's people appear to be a threat to their very existence. This is a fine read with an ingenious plot and fine pacing and an exotic but engaging setting. The characters are interesting and their motivations understandable if only their names were easier to pronounce and remember!. Recommended wherever fantasy has proven popular. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P S A/YA Better than most marred only by occasional lapses For the YA reader with a special interest in the subject Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12 and adults. Biography: Harry Turtledove is the Hugo-winning author of many SF and fantasy novels. His alternate-history novels include the bestselling The Guns of the South How Few Remain the Worldwar series and the recent Ruled Britannia. He lives with his wife and daughters in Los Angeles. McKinley Robin; Dickinson Peter
Water: Tales of Elemental Spirits

Tight spine bright pages. NO writing marks or tears inside book. 266 pages. From Publishers Weekly Each highly respected authors in their own right husband and wife Dickinson The Ropemaker and McKinley Spindle's End collaborate for the first time on a collection of enchanting tales linked by an aquatic theme. Infused with selkie legends and Greek and Roman underworld myths the tales possess a consistently compelling rhythmic tone despite the fact that the authors alternate in the tellings. Dickinson's opening "Mermaid Song" sets the tone for a tenuous relationship between those who dwell on sand and in sea; only the landsman who has listened to the stories passed down through generations can accord the sea its proper respect. McKinley's "The Sea-King's Son" builds on the traditional tale of the Sea-King's daughter who falls in love with a musician but with a satisfying twist. Taken together the installments also raise some thought-provoking issues. In "Mermaid Song" for instance Pitiable Nasmith must lie in order to escape her grandfather's abusive home while Hetta in "A Pool in the Desert" struggles with what constitutes truth. The workings of the Guardians' magic in McKinley's "Water Horse" remains mysterious and Dickinson never entirely explains the gender-divided mythology in "Sea Serpent" but fans of myths won't mind filling in the gaps. These creative interpretations brim with suspenseful chilling and wonderfully supernatural scenes from Iril's daring plan to kill the murderous sea serpent to Hetta's literal leap of faith. Ages 12-up. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information Inc. Putnam Pub Group Hardcover

Publishers Weekly This collection of 25 stories from the first three years 12 issues of Pulphouse contains horror fantasy SF and straight fiction. In her introduction Rusch The White Mists of Power observes that many of these stories have in common their defiance of categorization. In Lisa Goldstein's ``A Traveler at Passover'' the story of Elijah provides the catalyst that soothes a family's tensions and misunderstandings. ``The Soft Whisper of Midnight Snow'' by Charles de Lint ties together an artist's self-worth and creative ability. Both ``The Third Sex'' by Alan Brennert and Nancy A. Collins's ``The Two-Headed Man'' are reminiscent of Sturgeon in their consideration of love. The book is arranged in a progression--stories about sex precede those of violence and horror--and adjacent entries are often similar. Readers are advised to jump around to maximize their enjoyment.
