Few fictional characters hold as firm a place in our culture as Tarzan. His well-received debut in a magazine story in 1912 led to a book-length appearance in Tarzan of the Apes and its sequel The Return of Tarzan. The two books make up a single extended narrative taking Tarzan from his earliest days as an orphaned child in the jungles of West Africa. The first Tarzan movie was in 1918 directed by Scott Sidney and starring Elmo Lincoln Enid Markey True Boardman Kathleen Kirkham and others. Recently filmed was The Legend of Tarzan directed by David Yates in 2016 and starring Alexander Skarsgard Margot Robbie Samuel L. Jackson Christoph Waltz and many others. In between there were scores of films radio shows television episodes comic books games et cetera. And since that first appearance in print there have been twenty-four official Tarzan titles with almost uncountable editions and also fresh titles added to the serious by a number of different authors. .
