(titre, dédicace, préface et index), 164 pp. (*4, **4, A-T4, V6) Reliure d'attente de l'époque en cartonnage gris (reliure italienne). Edition Originale, rare. Superbe exemplaire imprimé sur papier fort, à marges immenses, en grande partie non rogné. Exemplaire tel que paru dans sa toute première reliure d'attente en cartonnage gris. "Le rachitisme est une maladie de la croissance et de l'ossification observée chez le nourisson et le jeune enfant. Elle se caractérise par une insuffisance de calcification des os et des cartilages et elle est due à une carence en vitamine D et en calcium. Cette carence est principalement liée à un défaut d'exposition solaire (rayonnement ultre-violet), plus accessoirement à des carences alimentaires. Le rachitisme est une maladie socio-géographique dépendant de la latitude, du climat, de la couleur de la peau, mais aussi de l'alimentation, de l'habillement et d'un milieu urbain défavorisé (vie à l'intérieur ou en pollution atmosphérique). Le rachitisme se présente comme un ensemble de déformations osseuses pouvant avoir des conséquences graves : troubles respiratoires et inféctions pulmonaires, ou encore, chez la fille, un bassin osseux étroit et rétréci, futur obstacle à un accouchement". (source Wikipedia) Le mot "rachitisme" semble trouver son origine dans le terme anglais "rickets". Celui-ci pourrait dériver de "rucket" ("souffle court" dans le dialecte du Dorset), de "rucken" ("secouer ou tituber"), de "wricken" ("tordre"), de "rick" ("entassé ou courbé", dans le vieil anglais), ou encore de "riquets" ("bossu" en normand). C'est dans la première moitié du XVII siècle que cette maladie appelé "The Rickets" commence à être étudiée. "Col nome di Rachitide appellano i medici quel male de' fanciullini, per cui quantunque prendano una bastante quantità di alimento, niente di meno si scarnano oltre modo ; ed hanno il ventre indurito e gonfio, e le ossa tutte del corpo scomposte, talmente che divengono mostruosi a vedersi, e perdon quasi la figura di Uomo". Après avoir attribué cette maladie à la volonté de Dieu, aux étoiles ou à la nature elle-même, les medecins du XVII et du XVIII siècle commencent à chercher sa cause dans la nourriture des enfants. C'est le cas de Zeviani qui écris : "Un'agrezza proveniente dal latte mal digerito, che infetta il canale degli alimenti, le vie del chilo, e passa finalmente ad infettare la comun massa degli umori dentro le vene, è l'unica e principale sorgente, da cui tutt'i sintomi provengono della Rachitide : Si de' dunque questa nemica materia portar fuori dal corpo ; correggere, ed impedire che più se ne ingeneri ; avendo anche riguardo di provvedere a' sintomi del male".
