Joseph Kuhn Régnier Joseph Wilfrid Louis Kuhn-Regnier December 10 1873 1940 was a French poster designer and illustrator. From 1900 to 1938: advertising designer and caricaturist in magazines such as La Vie Parisienne Fantasio Lectures pour tous and Le Sourire. He created the cover of La Jeune Revue June 1899 founded by Francis Laur. He exhibited a painting entitled L'Indifferente at the Salon d'Automne in 1904. Then he became a member of the Salon des humouristes. He illustrated a certain number of bibliophile works and became in the early 1920s one of the specialists in the illustration of educational works expressing himself in a clear and precise line drawing among others for Fernand Nathan. <p>New second Edition.</p><p>Two volumes 8vo pp. iii-xxii matching collation given by ICCU see below 172; 244; occasional very light spotting aside clean and fresh throughout; in contemporary vellum; gilt lettered black morocco labels on spines; light rubbing and marking but still an attractive copy.</p><p>A good copy of this uncommon translation of Hippocrates' <em>Aphorisms</em> translated with extensive notes and commentary by the Neapolitan physician Carlo Vincenti 1785-1823.</p><p>Vincenti offers a Latin text of each aphorism with an Italian translation but the bulk of the work is taken up with the footnotes containing his commentary which both reflects on the content and on the historical context of Hippocrates' writings while applying them to modern medical theory and practice referring particularly to the writings of Brown and Vincenti's own teacher Vitantinio Scattigna. The translation first appeared in 1813 and we have not been able to identify any other editions between that and the present one; both are rare.</p><p>Little is known of Vincenti; what details we have of him come from the title-page of his <em>Istituzioni di epidesmologia</em> Naples Marotta 1817 where he is described as 'Dottore di filosofia di medicina e di chirurgia chirurgo nel grande spedale degl' incurabili professore di chirurgia nel Real Collegio medico cerusico ec. ec.' that work also features a rather dashing frontispiece portrait as shown in the Wellcome's digitized copy. Boards show moderate wear and scuffing with rubbing along joints and edges exposed board at fore corners and scattered stains to covers. Text block is age toned and worn along edges with dust soiling and a small ink stain to the top edge. Lightly age toned and sparsely foxed throughout with scattered faint pencil marginalia in the early sections of the book. Faint penciling and contemporary ownership inscription on front endpaper.
