‎Exceedingly scarce first edition of this collection of 13 academic treatises on the wonders of nature. This magnificent work, by one of the greatest Danish polymaths of all time, epitomizes the the range of topics on which Bartholin wrote. Among the essays and lectures collected here, we have ""The study of the Danish language"" (1657)"" ""The shape of snow"" (1660)"" ""The pores of bodies"" (1663)"" ""On Cartesian physics"" (1664)"" ""On nature"" (1666)"" ""On judgement and memory"" (1667)"" ""On experiment"" (1668)"" ""On physical hypotheses"" (1669)"" ""On the shape of bodies"" (1671)"" ""Secrets of the sciences"" (1673).Rasmus Bartholin (also known in the latinized form Erasmus Bartholinus) (1625 - 1698) was a famous Danish scientist, physician and grammarian, famous primarily for his discovery ) of the double refraction of a light ray by Iceland spar (calcite), for writing the first grammar of the Danish language, and for his work on Descartes' analytic geometry.""Erasmus Bartholin's father was Caspar Berthelsen Bartholin... There were six sons in the family, and Erasmus had a brother, Thomas Bartholin, who was nine years older than himself. These two brothers went on to become equally famous. Erasmus received his first education from private tutors, then he attended a Latin school. He entered the University of Copenhagen in 1642, receiving his B.A. in 1644 and an M.A. in 1647. From 1645 he studied mathematics at the University of Leiden, travelling to France in 1651 but then going to Italy where he studied at a number of places including Padua from where he received a medical degree in 1654. From 1656 he was professor of geometry at the University of Copenhagen but transferred to become an extraordinary professor of medicine in the following year. In 1671 he was appointed to an ordinary chair of medicine at Copenhagen, a post to held until his death. In 1667 he was appointed Royal Mathematician. He served the University of Copenhagen as dean of the faculty of medicine, librarian, and rector, and was appointed royal physician and privy councillor.Despite being professor of medicine for a long period, he wrote relatively little on that topic. In terms of the number of publications, mathematics was the largest part of his work, but his work in this area is not of great importance. In fact he is best known for work in yet another area, for he was the discoverer of the double refraction of light. Bartholin edited Introduction to the geometry of Descartes by van Schooten and also translated Optics of Larissa into Latin. Every year between 1664 and 1674 he produced a book Dissertatio de problematibus geometricis. This consisted of theses which he had proposed for his students to defend. In the sixth such book, published in 1672, he gave a proof of what is known as the second problem of Debeaune, formulated in a letter to Mersenne written in 1638. The problem is the first example of an inverse tangent problem which in modern notation results in requiring the solution to the differential equation dy/dx = (x - y)/a, y(0) = 0.This has solution y = x + a(e-x/a - 1). Descartes solved Debeaune's problem in 1639. Bartholin considered the problem in geometric form. Pedersen suggests that Bartholin's proof may actually be Debeaune's original proof which we know he sent to Descartes. Bartholin could well have come across the proof in papers which Debeaune sent him for safe keeping shortly before his death in 1652. To see the range of topics on which Bartholin wrote, consider his book De naturae mirabilibus quaestiones academicae which he published in 1674. This consists of essays and lectures written over a number of years such as: The study of the Danish language (1657)" The shape of snow (1660) The pores of bodies (1663) On Cartesian physics (1664) On nature (1666) On judgement and memory (1667) On experiment (1668) On physical hypotheses (1669) On the shape of bodies (1671)" and Secrets of the sciences (1673). Bartholin wrote a large number of mathematical works but he is best remembered for his discovery of the double refraction of light through a crystal of Iceland spar which had been gathered in an expedition to Iceland in 1668. He wrote his text Experimenta crystalli Islandici disdiaclastici quibus mira & insolita refractio detegitur on the geometry of crystals in 1669. The two rays he called solita and insolita and he showed that both were produced by refraction. During his experiments, Bartholin also observed that when the crystals of Iceland spar are rotated about their axis, one of the two images moves in a circle around the other. This is strong evidence that the crystals are somehow splitting the light into two different beams. Bartholin's explanation was based on Descartes' theory of light along with his idea that there were two sets of ""pores"" in the crystal. However, the true explanation is that the crystal splits the light into two plane-polarized beams. He observed the comets of 1664 and 1665, and made other astronomical observations, publishing his descriptions of these events in De cometis anni 1664 et 1665 opusculum (1665). Bartholin also prepared for publication the observations of Tycho Brahe. In both these pieces of work in astronomy he was assisted by Ole Romer. Bartholin is also famed for his medical work, in particular his introduction of quinine in the fight against malaria. Some of his medical contributions were made in conjunction with his brother Thomas Bartholin who was a professor of anatomy at the University of Copenhagen from 1646 to 1661. Thomas Bartholin founded the journal Acta medica et philosophica Hafniensia to which Erasmus Bartholin contributed papers."" (J J O'Connor and E F Robertson, St. Andrews). Thesaurus: 348.‎

‎First edition of Parmentier's groundbreaking work that revolutionized the understanding of potatoes and their biological and chemical properties. Published in 1773, Parmentier's work sheds light on the scientific aspects of potatoes, their nutritional value, and their potential to address food scarcity and malnutrition. Permentier aimed at dispelling myths about and prejudices against potatoes, which were considered as food for livestock and were largely neglected as a human food during that era. His discoveries eventually caused Louis XVI, the French Monarch to declare: “La France vous [Parmentier] remerciera un jour d’avoir trouvé le pain des pauvres” (i.e. France will thank you one day for having found the bread of the poor). Parmentier's work on potatoes was a significant scientific breakthrough. By applying principles of chemistry and experimental analysis, he revealed the rich nutritional content and potential health benefits of this versatile crop. Parmentier's experiments showcased the potato's high water content, carbohydrate content, and its impressive array of vitamins and minerals. He also explored the potato's medicinal properties, using it to treat various ailments such as dysentery and scurvy. The publication of ""Examen Chymique des Pommes de Terre"" had a profound impact on society. Parmentier's research highlighted the importance of potatoes as a sustainable food source capable of supporting large populations. In an era plagued by famine and general food shortages, Parmentier's findings played a vital role in combating hunger and malnutrition. His efforts to promote potatoes as a staple food contributed to their acceptance and eventual integration into European diets. Parmentier's book had a lasting legacy shaping the fields of botany and chemistry. His meticulous observations and experiments on potatoes laid the groundwork for further scientific studies into plant chemistry and nutrition. Parmentier's work inspired subsequent researchers to explore the chemical composition of various crops, ultimately expanding our understanding of the fundamental building blocks of life. Moreover, his promotion of potatoes as a reliable and nutritious food source has left an permanent mark on agricultural practices worldwide. Not in Vicaire, Cagle, or Oberlé.‎

This became became the first successful general circulation model of climate (GCM). ""Numerical models (General Circulation Models or GCMs), representing physical processes in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and land surface, are the most advanced tools currently available for simulating the response of the global climate system to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. While simpler models have also been used to provide globally - or regionally-averaged estimates of the climate response, only GCMs, possibly in conjunction with nested regional models, have the potential to provide geographically and physically consistent estimates of regional climate change which are required in impact analysis...GCMs depict the climate using a three dimensional grid over the globe, typically having a horizontal resolution of between 250 and 600 km, 10 to 20 vertical layers in the atmosphere and sometimes as many as 30 layers in the oceans."" (IPCC - International Panel on Climate Change). In 1956, Norman Phillips developed a mathematical model that could realistically depict monthly and seasonal patterns in the troposphere, thus revolutionizing weather and climate change predition. It became the first successful climate model. Following Phillips' work, several groups began working to create GCMs that are now essential to predict climate change. ""Steady improvements to short-range NWP accrued during the early 1950s, in large part due to more realistic models that accounted for energy conversion in extratropical cyclones. Encouraged by the success of these forecasts, IAS team member Norman Phillips began to contemplate longer-range prediction using the IAS computer. His work took the form of a numerical simulation of the atmosphere's general circu lation for a period of 1 month. The work was completed in 1955 and Phillips communicated the results to von Neumann, who immediately recognized their significance. Von Neumann hastily arranged a conference in October 1955, Application of Numerical Integration Techniques to the Problem of the General Circulation, held at Princeton University. In his opening statement at the conference, von Neumann said I should like to make a few general remarks concerning the problem of forecasting climate fluctuations and the various aspects of the general circulation that cause such fluctuations. Specifically, I wish to point out that the hydro-dynamical and computational efforts which have been made in connection with the problem of short-range forecasting serve as a natural introduction to an effort in this direction . . . With this philosophy in mind, we held our first meeting nine years ago at the Institute for Advanced Study to discuss the problem of short-range weather prediction. Since that time, a great deal of progress has been made in the subject, and we feel that we are now prepared to enter into the problem of forecasting the longer period fluctuations of the general circulation. (von Neumann 1955, 9-10) Following this conference, which highlighted his numerical experiment, Phillips entered the research into competition for the first Napier Shaw Memorial Prize, a prize honoring England's venerated leader of meteorology, Sir Napier Shaw (1854-1945), on the occasion of the centenary of his birth (the competition was announced in April 1954). The subject for the first competition was ""the energetics of the atmosphere."" On 20 June 1956, ""the adjudicators recommended that the prize be given to Norman A. Phillips of the Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton, U.S.A. for his essay 'The general circulation of the atmosphere: a numerical experiment,' which had been published in the Quarterly Journal [of the Royal Meteorological Society] (82, p. 1230) [April 1956] ..."" (Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society 1956b)"" (Lewis: Clarifying the Dynamics of the General Circulation: Phillips's 1956 Experiment).‎

Internally nice and clean, with just a bit of light minor occasional brownspotting. Large engraved pictorial vignette (heading: Accdemia Fiorentina) to title-page. Very nice woodcut vignettes and initials throughout. XXXI, (1), 676, (2, - Approvazioni) pp. [Viviani's Galilei-biography: pp. 397-431].‎

‎First edition of this extensive work of biographies of the people of the Florentine Academy. Among the dozens of biographies in the present work, we have the first printing of Viviani's seminal biography of Galilei, the first, and by far the most important biography of the great astronomer ever written. It is from this biography that we have most of the canonical stories and anecdotes about Galilei that keep being repeated and quoted - e.g. the legend of Galilei demonstrating to his students that Aristotle was wrong about speed of fall being related to the weight of an object by dropping balls of different mass off the leaning tower in Pisa"" the stories of how he came up with the idea of the pendulum after having watched a suspended lamp swing back and forth in the cathedral of Pisa when he was still a student there - and furthermore also how his first experiments with pendulums were carried out (by his son due to his own failing eyesight), etc., etc.Vincenzo Viviani (1622-1703) considered himself Galilei's last pupil and he spent most of his life reinstating the ideas of Galilei. He was merely 20 years old when his master died, and he was present at the bedside of the dying master as well as at the removal of his body. Thus, he was a direct witness to many of the events that took place in Galilei's life, and as such he is an indispensible biographer - especially seeing that no other person had attempted a biograhy of the great astronomer. After Galielei's death, Viviani was granted a pension by the King of France, in exchange for him writing a great, massive biography of his master. This planned massive work never came about, though, - probably due to both fear of retaliation, inabilty to reconcile geometry with the dogmas of faith, and finally a general fear of what such a biography could carry with it politically, etc. (he had apparantly also been warned of this). What we have left of the massive work is that which is present in Salvini's collection of biographies of the Florentine Academy. The work is written in the form of a letter addressed to Prince Leopoldo de'Medici, and it was not printed during Viviani's lifetime, but only in 1717, in the present book. Though not as extensive as had originally been planned, and though not printed as soon as originally planned, the work is still of the greatest importance to our knowledge about Galilei and forms the foundation for all later works on the astronomer. For the student of Galilei, it is absolutely indispensible. Being the first biography of Galilei, and the only one written by a contemporary, and one who knew him very well, the work plays a greater role in the study of the master's life than any other work.Viviani may not have been a faithful chronicler or a clear interpreter, but we will have to make do with that which he can tell us about Galilei. Though not all stories may be true, almost all of the most famous anecdotes and legends that we have about Galilei stem from the present work. After having described the various marvels, discoveries, etc. of Galilei's life, Viviani ends by describing the last hours of Galilei's life: ""il Mercoledì delli 8. de Gennaio del 1641. ab Inc. a ore 4. di notte in età di settantasette anni, mesi dieci, e giorni vent, con Filosofica, e Christiana constanza, rese l'Anima al suo Creatore, inviandosi questa a godere, e rimarar più d'apresso quelle eterne maraviglie, ch'ella con tanta avidità, & impazienza aveva procurator per mezzo di fragil artifizio d'avvicinare agli occhi di noi mortali."" (p. 423) [""On the night of Jan. 8, 1641, at about 4 o'clock at night at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 20 days, with philosophical and Christian firmness he rendered up his soul to its Creator, sending it, as he liked to believe, to enjoy and to watch from a closer vantage point those eternal and immutable marvels which he, by means of a fragile device, had brought closer to our mortal eyes with such eagerness and impatience.""] - clearly showing the sense that Viviani had for Galilei's biblically inspired faith. The work furthermore contains several hitherto unpublished treatises on men from the famous scientific academy of Florence.‎

‎Étude des courants telluriques + Deuxième fascicule. - [FOUNDTAIONAL WORK ON GIC-IMPACT]‎

‎Stockholm, R.W. Statlanders Boktryckeri, 1935 + 1930. Large 4to. 2 vols in original printed wrappers. 1st part with some spine wear and a bit of wear to corners. ‎First printing of Stenquist's landmark work on earth currents, which includes his seminal scientific description of the great storm of May 1921 that has turned out to be one of the most significant reports in the history of geomagnetic storms and space weather. The work is of fundamental importance to extreme weather forecasting and is a classic in the field. ""The most spectacular (and most dangerous) examples of GIC impact were two destructive fires-the first in Sweden around 02:00 GMT on 15 May and the second in the United States around an hour later. The Swedish event occurred in a telephone exchange in the town of Karlstad, 260 km west of Stockholm. This event was widely reported around the world... It was also the subject of contemporary study by David Stenquist, a Swedish scientist and engineer, who had a long interest in what we would now call GIC impacts on telecommunications systems. One of his narrative reports on the event is included in his 1925 memoir on earth currents (Stenquist, 1925), and another is reproduced by Karsberg et al. (1959). They both outline how the operators at Karlstad exchange first experienced problems (equipment anomalies and faint smoke) around 01:00, followed by a period of quiet, before the main fire started around 02:00 leading to extensive equipment damage. Stenquist also highlighted a near-miss incident at Ånge, some 380 km north west of Stockholm, that was simultaneous with the Karlstad fire. This experienced a threat similar to that fire, but where the initial problems were sufficient to trigger preventive measures that avoided major damage. In his later analysis of the Karlstad fire (Albinson, 2018" Engström, 1928" Stenquist, 1925), Stenquist noted that this site was vulnerable to strong GIC, because it was on the 400 km route of the major communications lines between Oslo and Stockholm, and this route was vulnerable because of its east-west orientation. His insights into engineering design of the communications lines enabled him to estimate the geoelectric fields that created the damaging GIC. He showed that fields of at least 6 V/km were required to cause the observed melting of fuses, ""tubes de fusion,"" in copper wires, and that a field of 20 V/km would have caused more damage than observed (melting of fuses in iron wires). As a result he suggested that 10 V/km would be a reasonable estimate of the average geoelectric field in central Sweden at the time of the Karlstad fire."" (Hapgood). ""Over the past decade the public perception of space weather has changed markedly so that it is now considered a major societal risk alongside other natural hazards including pandemic disease, extremes of temperature, coastal and river flooding, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. As a result of this step change in public perception, improved understanding of severe space weather, and its impacts, is now a vital element in the scientific evidence sought by policy-makers responsible for societal resilience. Those policy-makers require information on both the likelihood, and the adverse impacts, of severe space weather, just as they do for other natural hazards. Only then can they integrate space weather into wider plans to ensure societal resilience against the whole range of natural hazards....A key element in this evidence is the likely timelines of extreme space weather events. Such knowledge enables us to build scenarios that give insights into the spatial and temporal distribution of adverse impacts, and into the information that will be available to enable timely decision-making before, during and after an extreme event. They are also vital for exercises to test mitigation plans and to train key personnel in government and industry. Scenarios are also critical inputs for realistic studies on the socio-economic impact of space weather. This study addresses one route to scenario development, namely, a review of previous severe space weather events, and specifically focuses on one outstanding case, the great storm of 13-16 May 1921, and particularly the very intense activity on 14/15 May."" (Mike Hapgood: Space Weather. The Great Storm of May 1921: An Exemplar of a Dangerous Space Weather Event).‎
