Dat ook de Noorse literatuur populair is onder het Nederlandstalige publiek blijkt uit de vele vertalingen die sinds halverwege de 18de eeuw, maar vooral vanaf de 19de eeuw verschijnen. In ons taalgebied drong de Noorse literatuur aan het eind van de 19de eeuw door met toneelstukken van Henrik Ibsen die nu nog tot de wereldliteratuur worden gerekend. Aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw leverden de Nobelprijswinnaars Bj?rnson, Hamsun en Undset literaire klassiekers af. Tegenwoordig zijn Noorse auteurs in ieder genre vertegenwoordigd: romans, crime, jeugdliteratuur, toneelstukken en poezie. Met de omvangrijke bibliografie heeft De Saeger alle Nederlandse vertalingen van Noorse auteurs in kaart gebracht. Daarbij gaat hij verder dan alleen literaire werken. Hij geeft een breed beeld van Noren die een bijzondere bijdrage hebben geleverd binnen hun vakgebied en waarvan het werk in het Nederlands is vertaald. Dat strekt zich ook uit over de politiek, architectuur en filosofie. De Saeger beperkt zich niet alleen tot besprekingen van de ruim 400 Noorse auteurs, maar vermeldt ook de vertalers. Zij zijn immers vaak de culturele bemiddelaars die het werk en gedachtegoed van de auteurs aan het Nederlandstalige publiek overdragen. Prof.dr. Raf De Saeger is hoogleraar en lid van ?Det Konglige Norske Videnskabers Selskab? in Trondheim.
