Extraordinaire ouvrage, imprimés sur plusieurs dizaines de papiers différents, visant à présenter aux bibliophiles les techniques d'impression et de typographie en couleurs. Il écrit en préface : "Ce qui est certain, c'est que le lecteur commence à se lasser de voir toujours du noir sur du blanc, et que le Livre de Demain ne ressemblera pas au Livre d'hier. J'ai essayé de montrer comment la couleur pouvait y être introduite non-seulement pour l'orner mais encore pour servir d'auxiliaire à l'écrivain". La collation très complexe est fournie par Vicaire (l'ordre des feuillets diffère dans notre exemplaire). Vicaire précise que dans quelques exemplaires (dont celui-ci fait partie) deux pièces "sont remplacées par une Dissertation étymologique sur les diverses origines du mot Cocu", comprenant 14 pp. (imprimées sur papier jonquille). Notre exemplaire est comme souvent incomplet (l'ouvrage fut publié en fascicules), il lui manque 8 pp. sur papier vert pré de Voiron dont une silhouette de Konewka, et 8 pp. de table des matières et d'errata, ainsi que 2 planches (Chambord et intérieur d'auberge) ; il est parfaitement complet par ailleurs, avec notamment un exemplaire signé de son portrait par De Rochas "à mon collaborateur S.M" (peut-être le typographe Meunier), et naturellement les 4 pages de cercles chromatiques, les échantillons de papiers rares, les autres silhouettes de Konewka, etc...
