Pomona Britannica is considered one of the most distinguished pomologies ever produced and is described as "one of the finest colour-plate books in existence." Prideaux. Named for Pomona the Roman Goddess of Fruit and Fruit Trees a pomology is simply a treatise on fruit culture. However there was nothing simple about the intent and execution of this fine work. In an effort to educate the landed country gentleman on the cultivation of fruit George Brookshaw 1751-1823 rendered and described the finest fruit under cultivation in the most esteemed gardens in London and the Royal Gardens particularly around Hampton Court and Kensington. Very little is known about the early years of Brookshaw's life and education. He was born in Birmingham and died an undistinguished death in London. However during the late 18th Century Brookshaw enjoyed significant notoriety as a talented cabinetmaker distinguished by royal patronage. Receipts from the Prince of Wales dating 1783 document the finely painted furniture commissioned from G. Brookshaw. Elegant cabinets tables and chimney pieces were painted with exquisite allegorical scenes bouquets of flowers and abundant cornucopias offering a glimpse into what was to become the hallmark of Brookshaw's talent; elegant and fluid renditions of fruit and flowers. George's talent as an engraver was perhaps influenced by Richard Brookshaw brother an established and talented mezzotint engraver in Paris during the 19th Century. Richard Brookshaw engraved several of the plates for the Folio edition of Pomona Britannica c.1812 however as the last of Richard's engravings are dated 1804 we conclude every one of the plates in this large Quarto edition were engraved by George Brookshaw himself. This edition should not be considered a miniature version of the Folio edition where the fruit is set on dark mezzotint grounds. Apples - the story of the fruit of temptation Alan Davidson's copy
London: Allen Lane - The Penguin Press 1999. Small 8vo pp 8 172 a very good copy in slightly stretched dustwrapper. Alan Davidson's copy with his "fishy" bookplate. One of the most important figures in twentieth century culinary writing and scholarship Davidson was a British diplomat and historian best known for his writing and editing on food and gastronomy. He was the author of the 900-page encyclopedic The Oxford Companion to Food. In 1948 Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington Tunis Brussels Cairo the Hague; from 1973 to 1975 he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. The original manuscript was copied with a stencil machine. A copy reached the British cooking guru Elizabeth David who passed it on to Penguin Books which published it in 1972 as Mediterranean Seafood. This was followed by Seafood Of South East Asia 1979 and North Atlantic Seafood 1979 for which he travelled throughout the region gathering thousands of recipes from Portugal to Iceland. Cloth. Volume I covers 1515-1849 while Volume II spans 1850-1950. Volume I is 40 pages plus a large collection of black and white plates. Volume II is 37 pages plus another large collection of full-page black and white plates. Inclusions in this work are restricted to painters for whom, in at least one known painting the inclusion of representational flowers, fruit or still life has been of major importance. This definition allows the inclusion of many of the almost unknown illustrators who, working for scientific or horticultural publications have nevertheless served the two masters - Art and Science. Front endpaper removed from Volume I. Usual library markings to both volumes else unmarked. Average wear to blue boards. Washington: U.S. Department of Agriculture 1952. Small quarto one plate pp 4 152 typed and stencilled paperback stapled slightly aged and worn. Alan Davidson's copy with his "fish" bookplate. One of the most important figures in twentieth century culinary writing and scholarship Davidson was a British diplomat and historian best known for his writing and editing on food and gastronomy. He was the author of the 900-page encyclopedic The Oxford Companion to Food. In 1948 Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington Tunis Brussels Cairo the Hague; from 1973 to 1975 he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. The original manuscript was copied with a stencil machine. A copy reached the British cooking guru Elizabeth David who passed it on to Penguin Books which published it in 1972 as Mediterranean Seafood. This was followed by Seafood Of South East Asia 1979 and North Atlantic Seafood 1979 for which he travelled throughout the region gathering thousands of recipes from Portugal to Iceland. Paperback.
