Illustrated with 162 line drawings large 8vo pp iv 286 paperback slightly worn spine repaired and with slight tape marks a withdrawn duplicate from the library of Royal Botanic Gardens Kew with stamps on the upper cover and verso of the title page and a bookplate. Alan Davidson's copy with his "fishy" bookplate. One of the most important figures in twentieth century culinary writing and scholarship Davidson was a British diplomat and historian best known for his writing and editing on food and gastronomy. He was the author of the 900-page encyclopedic The Oxford Companion to Food. In 1948 Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington Tunis Brussels Cairo the Hague; from 1973 to 1975 he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. The original manuscript was copied with a stencil machine. A copy reached the British cooking guru Elizabeth David who passed it on to Penguin Books which published it in 1972 as Mediterranean Seafood. This was followed by Seafood Of South East Asia 1979 and North Atlantic Seafood 1979 for which he travelled throughout the region gathering thousands of recipes from Portugal to Iceland. Paperback. A beautiful engraving from Johann Christoph Volckamer's " Nurnbergische Hesperides ". These plates are modeled after those in Ferrari's 17th century Hesperides the first publication devoted to citrus fruit with an image of the fruit in the upper half of the picture but are enhanced with charming perspective drawings of gardens and views making them of particular interest to gardeners and garden historians. This plate shows a view of the town of Hummelstein now an area of Nuremberg beneath the pink title ribbon and picture of a lemon. At upper right: "Pag. 188 a." Circa 1600. Wood cut handcolored sheet size 13 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches. Very good condition. This is a sheet from a German herbal from the 16th century an edition of the work of Pierandrea Matthioli which was originally published in 1544 with contemporary handcolor. More than 40 editions of this work "Commentarii in Sex Libros Pedacii Dioscoridis" were published. The illustrations are in the style of the work of Leonhart Fuchs whose "De Historia Stipium" was published in 1542 and is with the "Herbarum Vivae Eicones of Brunfels" published in 1530 one of "the two main landmarks of botanical illustration and scholarship in the first half of the 16th century. These were the first biological books which relied on scientifically accurate illustrations." Rix Art of Botanical Illustration. The primary purpose of the herbal was to identify the medicinal properties of plants in contrast to the purely decorative function of later florilegia. . unknown
