Edizione originale e rara. E' presente solo il primo volume di testo (manca il secondo). Edoardo Grendi ha assimilato l’opera di Issel a un codice documentario (GRENDI 1996, pp. 62-63). In effetti Issel elenca e descrive i manufatti – litici, metallici, fittili– in relazione ai giacimenti (pliocenici, quaternari e neolitici o recenti), agli scopritori, e poi alle collezioni o ai musei nei quali sono conservati. In questo approccio scientifico e con la forte attenzione per la didattica e la pedagogia civica, Issel resta immune dalle mitologie del ligurismo, denuncia come priva di qualsiasi valore scientifico l’espressione “Razza ligure” . Ma soprattutto egli insiste sui concetti di stratificazione, commistione, incrociamento, penetrazione, confusione e sull’idea di facies prossime l’una all’altra, nel medesimo periodo, o di fasi successive ma non necessarie, più che di epoche come successione di tempi. Issel discute le tipologie definite da Gabriel de Mortillet, ovvero l’ordinamento dei tempi storici fondato sui manufatti (RAGGIO 2008, p. 271): “[...] anche rispetto a questa classificazione esprimo il fermo convincimento che non rappresenti rispetto alle epoche una successione di tempi, ma una serie di facies, fra le quali due, in qualche caso tre, prossime l’una all’altra, nel medesimo periodo, furono simultanee in regioni più o meno lontane” (ISSEL 1908, p. 33).‎
