The literary campaign that Saadiah, first among the Rabbanites, started against the Karaites, and whose external history I have on a former occasion attempted to trace, found the foe ready to join battle. There arose a complete array of Karaite scholars, who, either in special writings, or incidentally in the course of their works, repelled the attacks of Saadiah with energy. But they were not content to remain on the defensive. They speedily assumed an offensive attitude, and endeavoured, with varying degrees of success, to overthrow the arguments and proofs advanced by Saadiah in support of the Oral Law. A disagreeable element in the campaign is the personal abuse into which the controversy often degenerated: objective treatises are marred by regrettable recrimination. It must, however, be admitted that in this respect both parties sinned, although perhaps the Karaites sinned the more deeply. The controversy initiated by Saadiah's activity did not cease with his death. It was not confined to the Gaon alone, but drew within its range the whole of Rabbinism.

San Martin's second and conclusive report on the success of the Battle of Maipu on the 5th of April which won the Chilean stuggle for independence. San Martin and his rebels completely destroyed the Spanish forces led by General Mariano Osorio. The Spaniards were so completely overrun with nearly 3000 prisoners taken and 2000 dead that San Martin soon swept through and liberated Peru. The Savannah River Site SRS is a nuclear reservation in the United States in the state of South Carolina located on land in Aiken Allendale and Barnwell counties adjacent to the Savannah River 25 miles 40 km southeast of Augusta Georgia. The site was built during the 1950s to refine nuclear materials for deployment in nuclear weapons. The Savannah River National Laboratory SRNL is a multi-program national laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy's DOE Office of Environmental Management. SRNL is located at the Savannah River Site SRS near Jackson South Carolina. It was founded in 1951 as the Savannah River Laboratory. It was certified as a national laboratory on May 7 2004. SRNL research topics include environmental remediation technologies for the hydrogen economy handling of hazardous materials and technologies for prevention of nuclear proliferation. It has specific experience in vitrification of nuclear waste and hydrogen storage initially developed to support production of tritium and plutonium at the Savannah River Site during the Cold War. The Savannah River Site was constructed to produce the basic materials necessary in the fabrication of nuclear weapons primarily tritium and plutonium-239. In support of these efforts the Savannah River Laboratory was created. In August 1950 a top secret letter regarding the scope of work for the site included the directive that "new research and development facilities would be included at the main site or elsewhere to the extent required to support the work. Such facilities will be provided for the solution of process improvement and process development problems which may arise in connection with the work." With this directive the Savannah River Laboratory was created and soon became the second largest research facility for operator E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company. The original Savannah River Laboratory included five main facilities: a main laboratory for process development and experimental research; the Waste Disposal Facility to handle waste created by the laboratory; the Pile Physics laboratory which contained experimental reactors; and CMX and TNX. CMX was established to determine the treatment needed for cooling water in reactor heat exchangers and TNX was used to determine operational information for separations. The laboratory quickly expanded to include a health physics laboratory equipment engineering laboratory and temporary labs such as a fluid pressure bonding laboratory and a mockup of a reactor tank. 8vo., ?Third Edition, with a lithographed frontispiece (original tissue guard present), engraved and printed titles, 11 lithographed plates (one depicting flies; all original tissue guards present) and 10 woodcut illustrations in the text, frontispiece and illustrated title mildly foxed; original ribbed green cloth, gilt back, yellow endpapers, uncut AND PARTIALLY UNOPENED, a remarkably bright, clean, crisp copy. With the fine nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate of Henry Ashworth James on front paste-down, 8pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end and single-leaf prospectus for the enlarged edition of Lloyd's Field Sports tipped in. The illustrations are by Haghe, Landseer and Williams from paintings by Wilkie, Landseer, Simson and Cooke. 'Next to Walton himself, there's no more engagingly discursive and allusive writer in the language. For the feel of fishing, the sense of it, I almost said the taste of it, I know of no other to place him beside' (Gingrich). A lovely copy of the best reissue; Scrope's classic treatise was first published in 1843. James was owner of Hurstmonceux Place in Sussex.
