Marino Moretti (Cesenatico, 18 luglio 1885 – Cesenatico, 6 luglio 1979) è stato un poeta, romanziere e drammaturgo italiano, noto soprattutto come poeta crepuscolare. Sarà durante gli anni della guerra che avverrà l'esordio di Moretti come romanziere con Il sole del sabato pubblicato nel 1916 ma già uscito nel 1913 su Il Giornale d'Italia, al quale seguirà nel 1918 Guenda che otterrà buoni consensi. Risale al 1935 L'Andreana, al 1937 Anna degli elefanti e al 1941 La vedova Fioravanti, il romanzo che verrà accolto come il suo capolavoro da critici letterari autorevoli come Emilio Cecchi e Pietro Pancrazi. Se vi avvicinate a questo come a ogni altro dei romanzi morettiani per sunteggiarli (...) sono formati di minime cose: di fatterelli, cioè, che a uno a uno sono insignificanti - forse insulsi - ma che composti insieme dall'arte dell'autore creano una suggestione spirituale, esprimono uno stato d'animo. Ecco, potremmo dire che l'azione del romanzo è il trapasso dei diversi stati d'animo della vedova Fioravanti sotto l'influsso del figlio prete, don Dorligo. Questa donna era un temperamento esuberante, smaniosa di vivere; aveva sempre bisogno di dedicarsi a qualcosa, piena com'era di invadenza e di inquieti desideri. "Le mancava, purtroppo, il senso del soprannaturale e dell'eterno", è detto precisamente in un punto. Con una simile natura, contenersi negli argini del dovere non le tornava agevole. Rimasta vedova, la signora Mitelda, ancora troppo giovane e piacente con tutta quella vita che le ribolliva nel sangue, sarebbe scivolata verso chi sa quali precipizi se non avesse avuto un figlio, dapprima seminarista e poi sacerdote. Era il pensiero e la presenza di lui che le teneva le redini. "Se non ci fosse stato lui, non avrebbe proprio vissuto". Cercava di occuparsi di mille cose che riguardavano il suo don Dorligo. Così, sempre col pensiero del suo prete, non senza tentennamenti quella madre illudeva la giovane donna ch'era in lei e che rallentava troppo a sfiorire. Nel tempo in cui il suo don Dorligo rimase coadiutore a San Mauro in Fiume, lontano da lei, non tardò a sentire che quell'assenza era per lei una debolezza. Cercò l'amicizia di un pescivendolo e sarebbe caduta: ma apertosi d'improvviso l'armadio, "la vista delle pianete le ricordò il figlio prete e il voto di castità di costui": di colpo trovò la forza di sottrarsi. Un pensiero, forse inavvertito, dovette attraversarle l'anima in quella circostanza: "Come potrà il mio don Dorligo così giovane a mantenersi diritto e fedele al suo voto, se sua madre cade?". Don Dorligo era un caro pretino, delicato di coscienza e a un tempo ingenuo. Così delicato che non gli piaceva recitare il breviario senza indosso la sua veste da prete. Sua madre, poi, si accorgeva che faceva i fioretti alla Madonna: mortificava gli orecchi proibendosi d'ascoltare alla radio una vellicante melodia; mortificava il palato rifiutando a tavola della frutta gustosissima; mortificava gli occhi chiudendo di colpo un libro illustrato. La madre provava rabbia davanti a queste privazioni. Don Dorligo intanto proprio con questi piccoli atti di devozione accumulava una forza da leone per l'ora della lotta, e l'accumulava anche per sua madre, ch'era sempre una fragile donna. E l'ora tremenda non tardò.
