‎Ouvrage publié par l'escadre de la Méditerranée.Le contre-amiral Parîs a eu une carrière exceptionnelle de marin et de chercheur, mais il fut aussi un authentique peintre et dessinateur. Il a passé de très longues années en mer sur une grande partie des océans du globe, il a navigué sur les derniers voiliers de la marine de l'État et sur les premiers vapeurs à roues et à hélice. Il est le créateur d'une discipline, l'ethnographie nautique et son ouvrage sur la construction navale des peuples extra-européen reste une source documentaire de premier ordre. Les vingt-deux dernières années de sa vie qu'il passa à la tête du Musée naval du Louvre ont profondément marqué cet établissement.‎
