‎Band in guter Erhaltung, Einband sauber, nur ein wenig bestoßen, Seiten hell und sauber und ohne Einträge, Der Chiemgau weist neben einer Jahrtausende alten Kultur mit berühmten Sehenswürdigkeiten wie Kloster Seeon, die Fresken in der Kirche von Urschalling oder Schloss Herrenchiemsee eine besonders reiche naturräumliche Ausstattung an Lebensräumen auf. Diese reicht vom Hochgebirge bis zu den Mooren und Seen im Vorland mit dem Chiemsee als zentralem Element. Entsprechend groß ist der Artenreichtum an Vögeln: 180 Vogelarten haben mindestens einmal im Chiemgau gebrütet oder unternahmen Brutversuche, 147 davon brüten hier regelmäßig. Die Anzahl aller sicher nachgewiesenen Vogelarten in unserem Gebiet beläuft sich auf 329. Der Chiemsee stellt für Wasservögel ein Rastgebiet von internationaler Bedeutung dar, aber auch viele der kleineren Gewässer weisen eine hohe Bedeutung für rastende oder brütende Wasservögel und Schilfbrüter auf. Der Anteil an Schutzgebieten - europäischen Vogelschutzgebieten wie Naturschutzgebieten - ist daher weit überdurchschnittlich hoch. Das Buch analysiert zum ersten Mal die Bedeutung des Chiemgaus für die Vogelwelt. Es wertet die Wasservogelzählungen über einen Zeitraum von 47 Jahren aus (seit 1967/68) und dokumentiert die Bedeutung von verschiedenen Gebietsteilen für die Brutvögel, mausernde Wasservögel sowie rastende und überwinternde Vögel. Alle im Freiland nachgewiesenen Vogelarten werden in einem eigenen Artkapitel behandelt. Der hohe Artenreichtum führt zu einer immer größer werdenden Bedeutung des Chiemseegebiets für Vogelkundler von nah und fern. Bis heute werden daher neue Arten beobachtet, manche verschwinden aber auch wieder. Das liegt teilweise an der natürlichen Dynamik, zu einem großen Teil aber auch an der Einflussnahme des Menschen auf die Natur. Daher behandelt das Werk auch den Aspekt des Vogelschutzes im Chiemgau in einem eigenen Kapitel.‎
